ME TOO!!! Oh, God, it's so soon!! we made some amazing improvements last night at rehearsal, but I'm not sure if we're ready still. I guess we'll see where we are after the game tonight, and if we still suck, we'll be yelled at and then lose, I suppose. I know we're better than a lot of people who are competing, but still. There's only one other band in our class, so we either win or lose. So nervous!

^Lucky. Our BD wanted that, but he got very turned down.
So. First competition yesterday. We got jipped. We lost by 2 points out of 1000 to Peachtree Ridge because while on brass judge gave us 97, the other gave us 88, which is a ridiculously large difference. Overall: 1st- Kell 2nd- Peachtree Ridge 3rd- Norcross Open Class: 1st- Peachtree Ridge (best drumline, brass) 2nd- Norcross (best drum major, woodwinds, color guard) so see, we won the most captions and should have won best brass too. Then we would have gotten 2nd and first, not last and 3rd booooo @ Brookwood judges...again. For the third year in a row. |

That's what I did this past summer. If you can, though, I'd recommend you not take them at the same time. It gets a little overwhelming if you intend to have any similation of a social life at all

No....not at all...but some places like Texas take it very very seriously
Yea..we went to a clinic there and they were hard core. We asked what sports they were in and they're like...Marching Band...we were like no SPORTS! |

QUOTE(fallen_angel1137 @ Jan 12 2005, 3:37 PM) I don't consider it a sport....to me, a sport is like tennis or softball or something where you're actually running and working out and stuff..in marching band you don't work out...so no it's not a sport. Yeah, we do run everyday in practice and we do conditioning and stretches and almost everything regular sports do. While playing an instrument. I think it's harder to be a marching band member then say, a softball member or something like that. We do 14 hour days, and hardly any breaks, you get yelled at if you slack at all, we have practice every day for an hour during school, and bi-weekly after school rehearsals. Then competitions all weekend October - December. I would say it's a sport. |

QUOTE(tweeak @ Jan 3 2006, 4:25 PM) No, I'm in marching band in Missouri, at Fox, it's near St. Louis. The biggest thing we do is Greater St. Louis Marching Band Festival, we don't have the money yet to go to BOA. We just got a new band director this year, and so far he's really pushing us and making us very competitive, I think we will be going there in the near future. Man, I wish I lived in Texas. I know they have an awesome band program, and I would really enjoy a challenge. I am honestly bored at my school, we only have one big symphonic band and 1/2 the kids are freshman. I am a sophmore, but I am 1st chair, and it's safe to say there is no competition for me here. I was in district band this year, it was a lot of fun. I wish I could move to Texas. :-( |

Aww, that sucks, although there is good band in good places besides Texas (in Georgia, a lot of bands are smaller, but there's still a lot of really good ones). My school isn't one of the largest ones, and we still have 4 band classes and 150 in marching band. Also, I think it can get pretty competitive to audition for district and all-state things.

Yeah, I tried out for district this year and made it, somewhere in the middle chairs. I was too intimidated to try out for state though. I don't have that much confidence in myself, plus I really don't want to be forced to practice like 3 hours a day to learn all the scales and stuff. It's a lot of work. I'm good, but not that good. lol.

Heh, yes and no are tied.
Yeah, memorizing scales sucks. I only really know the easiest ones. I just don't have the pacience to learn the rest. |

Well if you consider cheerleading a sport then marching band should be too.
I was in marching band (never do it!) and we did have to go to competitions. It's really harder than it looks. Having to be in perfect sync with everyone else WHILE playing an instrument is hard. I think it really depends on how you look at it. |

I've come across several people who are persistant in proving that marching band is a sport. Their points are valid, but I dunno... I find it hard to consider marching band as a sport.
What do you think? |

Let me tell you this: if you think cheerleading's a sport, then marching bands DEFINITELY make a sport.
Otherwise, I don't know. It's more music ;) |
