Don't know if it's a similar system to Xanga, but anyone help me out with making Livejournal styles, based on a current one, or even a new style? I'm mostly concerned with the override codes but would also appreciate help on how to modify Livejournal styles to my own preferences.

Sorry, posted it then couldn't find it. You can probably delete the other one now. Thanks.

Do you have a free account or a paid account?

I have a free account, so I'm going to tell you what I know assuming the same for you.

Firstly, rather than posting all the overrides here, I'll tell you that journalhelp.com is a great place to get started learning. I would use the overrides for generator, found here (http://www.journalhelp.com/generator.html) because that's the easiest style to modify. That should give you enough to start making something, it covers almost everything you would expect to be able to change.

There are several things that aren't as apparent, such as adding a header image. To do this, you would use LASTN_WEBSITE in your overrides. For example:

To add a sidebar, you'd just add the code right underneath the image:

Then this part isn't completely necessary since the header image should cover it up, but it's a good idea to get rid of that top table.

Keep in mind that for the code under LASTN_WEBSITE to work, you must have some website listed in your profile. You could link to yourself, link to CB, link to Google, whatever, but it kinda makes sense: the code is replacing the website portion of your navigation box, so something has to be there for it to work. Basically what the code is saying is "If the user has a website listed, then this is what will be displayed."

Good luck and as always, feel free to post back with any more questions. Welcome to CB. _smile.gif

Awesome, thanks a lot. Will probably be back in a few days with more gormlessness but this should keep me occupied for a while. Appreciated.

So a few hours later, I want to know:

how did she do that?

Oh and I have a paid account, but also, the sidebar overrides don't seem to be working:

<!-- begin code provided by createblog.com -->

LASTN_WEBSITE<=

<div style="position: absolute; left: 10px; top: 50px; width: 50px; visibility: visible">
Testing testing
</div>

<=LASTN_WEBSITE
<!-- end code provided by createblog.com -->

Am I just being extra demented?

This may seem like a stupid question, but do you have a website listed in your profile? pinch.gif

Uhm.. hmm. I'm trying to think of what else could be the problem, but perhaps 50 pixels isn't wide enough for words to fit. Try making it 150 px and see if that helps.

You can do most of the stuff she has by using overrides (to my knowledge). She's got a header image, a sidebar, and a background image that repeats down the page. But you have more freedom with a paid account, so I'd try to edit your own style. And since I don't have a paid account, I don't really trust my limited knowledge to advise you, so here are a couple of links that explain it way better than I ever could:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/shatteredtest/1332.html
http://www.livejournal.com/users/cp63testlj/2020.html

So that will take you in a completely different direction, but I think you'll find that you get more freedom this way.

Yeah, I have a website listed in my profile. It was the width of the sidebar. Thanks a lot. And thanks for the links.

Right, so those sites were really helpful. Just one question that I can't seem to figure out: how do I align the entry boxes to the right? It seems to be defaulted to the left and I can't figure out where to put the code to change this, or even which section, LASTN_EVENT or LASTN_PAGE.
