well you can find out where they live unless its an AOL IP. uhm Many things but i suggest if they are doing hacking or illegal things then report them to your ISP and their ISP rather then taking things into your own hands.

Thats a partial IP address since it blocks out the last digits. you can find out their ISP and general location but not the exact location.

once you're an official createblog member, you can go to xanga tools and have a username tracker...it has every xanga member's username...(whoever visited your site)

there's way too many methods of obtaining ip addresses. but, usually you wont gain much from it. people who like security use proxies, so their ip address is hidden. you can run a traceroute on it and see what routers it jumps through and usually the dns of the last jump will narrow it down to a state or city.

yea all a traceroute does is just shows the hops that the internet connection uses, and then it will go to the last hop where the internet connection company is.

or am i wrong about that

youre absolutely right. the very last hop before you hit the final computer is the isp of that computer. its also the local isp so the dns will have something like nyc.rr.com (guess where that is lol). but, if you traceroute a proxy, you'll get the hops it takes to get to the proxy server and it will hide where it forwards the packets to.
