Do you guys think this is true on certain levels? Do believe that Asians, especially the older generations, tend to stereotype African Americans more often than other races?
I do. All my life, my parents always have this negative view towards the black community; I grew up with my parents telling me African Americans are this and they are that. My parents' actions scream out racism. In the car, whenever a black male dressed in casual, street clothes walks by, my dad would lock the car doors. He never does this when an asian man or white man walks along the streets next to the car. To him, all African Americans would try to: break in and steal the car; hold a gun to his head and demand his wallet and any other valuables; or even both. Also, I remember when I had this group of black friends in elementary school, my parents told me to stop talking to them because apparently they are dumb, stupid people who are dirty and unclean. I still don't know why they think that way. Perhaps because of the fact that, in the past, African Americans were slaves, many Asians look down upon them. Perhaps since black males overrepresent the perpetrators of violence and crime, many Asians believe that most if not all African Americans lie, steal, cheat, rape, or kill. I just don't understand why they judge a whole group of people based on the actions of the few. |

Well, I wouldn't know too much about this, but you do realize not only Asian people act this way, right?
Anywho, Americans kept Japanese people in concentration camps for a period of time after Pearl Harbor, so I don't think looking down on the African Americans for being slaves would be it, especially if you were Japanese. I don't know, I think a camp where you're kept to work only for the point of you dying is worse. |

My parents are similar. However they never respectfully call them by their name, they state them as blacks in chinese. They're always telling me not to say that word when a black person is near or I'd get beat down. I highly doubt it.
Somethings similar happened to me: I went to a friends house once and his grandfather thought I was Japanese and started pushing me out the door. ![]() |

I'm sure if you lived here during Pearl Harbor, perhaps were serving there during it, you would too.
Especially if he's not Asian. Because we can't tell the difference between the countries you come from. And that's not an insult, we just can't, just like you can't tell what country I come from. |

Ha! Ignorance.
You don't want to know what they told me about asians. Horrible things, 99 % are racists jokes and whatnot. Just leave them to it, you can't change their beliefs. |

WOW! this is my first time ever hearing anything like this. to me i really dont think that all asians stereotype african americans more than any other race. people stereotype people all the time. maybe your parents just dont understand African americans or somethin!
But have you ever tried talking to your parents, and do you feel the same way about African Americans as your parents do? |

I don't know. Asian parents just seem more open about it, like you could tell that they don't like a certain group of people.

Than who? Not only asians do that..
I mean, hello. How many members of the Klu Klux Klan are Asian? People do it because of their personality and thoughts as a person. Race does not dictate anythingggggg. Your color of your skin does not affect your thoughts on anything else. You're a person. |

Well, you know I'm not trying to say that only Asians harbor racist thoughts against African Americans. I just don't understand why most Asians just bash African Americans more than let's say Caucasians.

^ I don't know about you, but my mom gets pretty heated when it comes to caucasians, too.
I think you can go as far to say that my mom discriminates against anyone who isn't Cantonese. Actually, no. We should say that my mom discriminates against anyone not in our immediate family. I tell her to stop being so racist, and she just doesn't listen. Cultures are simply different from each other. All my life I've been immersed in a mixture of two of them - the Chinese and the North American. I've seen so many difference between the two, and I can tell you from my personal experiences that the Chinese are much, MUCH more outspoken about what they like and what they don't like. I guess this could lead people to believe that Asians are more racist, but it's just a matter of whether the person expresses that dislike or not. QUOTE(disco infiltrator @ Oct 23 2005, 7:09 AM) I'm sure if you lived here during Pearl Harbor, perhaps were serving there during it, you would too. Especially if he's not Asian. Ehh...just because he can't tell a Japanese person from a Korean or a Chinese from a Filipino, doesn't mean he should go around assuming everyone is Japanese. I don't think any reasons or support can justify this man's behaviour. |

My parents rarely make racial comments, but when they do, they stereotype Asians more so than any other races. They tell me to always lock my car doors regardless of the people in the surrounding.
I guess it depends on parents. When you say "Asians", I can't help but to think you're grouping all Asian parents together. |

I totally agree. I think my parents have a stereotype because of tv. They're not overwhelming in their veiws, but its still there. |

Yes that is true. My grandfather is a traditional chinese man and he said he will disown me and my family if I ever go into a relationship with an African American. Same with my dad but my dad is only going to disown me.
Back then in the old days it was usally because of the skin color and the "pedigree" of a "breed". Nowadays my elders don't like black people because they stereotyped them to be "gangsters" or "ghetto" or "violent" and all that stuff I know some black people that aren't like that.... *edit* as for the person above me...my elders don't watch TV that often so idk...i think they learn it from newspapers and stuff |

It's not just Asians. Anyone from an older generation who comes from a different country and isn't used to seeing African Americans would probably be racist toward them if all they knew about the race was the stereotype.
I'm lucky my parents aren't like that. My mom has always been very openminded and accepting of all races, and my dad grew up in a predominantly black community. He has the benefit of sympathizing with both Asian and African Americans. I agree about the media and entertainment having a lot to do with perpetuating the "thug" sterotype as well. |

My parents are the same as the guy who made the topic.
Why? Because they've had horrible experiences with African Americans, and so did I. Partially, it's because of their parents probably. They just tell me to be careful but they're very cautious when they're near. Like one time, my African friend got beat up by his dad, his dad went to jail because like 20 people on the street saw him torture my friend. I got scared. |

Well, saying that Asians stereotype African Americans IS stereotyping in itself, to some degree, but I won't get into that.
I don't know if I want to concur with you, because I personally don't like stereotyping...things. But personally, my mum, more than my dad, stereotypes African Americans. She tends to mention them in a hushed voice..which I absolutely get ticked off at! |

My parents, especially my mom, is that way. She calls them "he ning," or "black-colored people" in Shanghai dialect, which I guess is probably much better than calling them niggers or something. But she's deathly afraid of them and has very stereotypical thoughts about them. It's terrible, especially since I'm really against racism. She pretty much does everything your parents do. Both of my parents, actually.

yes, because all asian parents i've seen have had something against them. im not even sure why, its not like they've had experiences with them. they're always talking about how they act, dress, and how they didnt have jobs, but those were only the ones from one area where we lived before. where we live now, you cant live here unless you have a job because it would be too expensive living off only the goverment's money. it's really annoying because i dont really care about their opinions about other people, i'd rather form my opinions based on what i've experienced instead of what they have, and what they've heard.
plus, asians tend to believe every gossipy thing they here. |
