The Hymnal We Used

You sat there, talking in arbitrary voices again.
It’s a forgotten language that few comprehend.
But, I understand that it was your chapel and that was your hymn.
You turned and asked if I was always the epitome of wisdom.

You sat there with two black eyes.
Discussing with whoever will engage.
If I were only to but turn and connect.
And I did and you saw, the fire underneath charisma.

You sat there with slanted scrawl.
I'd have taken the blame over again.
Your mouth was always captivating me into a stumble;
It’s like an open grave.

I was just the girl with the last name thing.
You were just the boy with your brain drained.
And we were the only ones who made it work.
Looking back— it’s quite possibly ingenious.

I thought I was just your tic-tac-toe mate,
That I was just the one with the play date.
But that’s not what you sang that day,
when we were the only ones in the room.

Clever boy, genius boy… I forgot how I signed you away.
But I remember the familiar tune and how you wrote your name.
We’ve moved on now, from those church bell days.
And I forgot the lines to the song, but I expect you did the same.
