changing navigation links. Options

I want to add my own text links just below the regular livejournal navigation box. is that possible? I tried this; xx , all that showed up was the text, and the links did not work. can anyone PLEASE help? i'm using generator on a free account if that helps. this is my journal; xx

yes, i did that, but now i dont know where to place my links, and i tried adding them after the code you provided, but it doesn't make it a link. it just shows up as the name of the link.
