RIP Taylor Behl, The angel goes to heaven Options

Richmond police confirmed this afternoon (Oct. 6) that a body discovered yesterday in rural Mathews County is that of Taylor Marie Behl, 17, of Vienna, missing since Sept. 5.


Identification was confirmed by dental records, according to Richmond Chief of Police Rodney Monroe. The cause of death has not yet been determined.


Earlier today, after police said it could be days before a positive identification could be made, Behl's mother, Janet Pelesara, said she believed the body to that of her daughter.

Speaking from her Vienna home, Pelesara said the family had a high degree of certainty that her daughter's body has been found and had harsh words for whoever is responsible for her death.

Pelesara said she believed authorities would "bring the subhuman to justice and I pray he gets the death penalty."

George O. Peterson, Pelesara's attorney, said Richmond police are already holding a "prime suspect," an apparent reference to Richmond photographer Ben Fawley, 38, who is being held by Richmond police on unrelated child pornography charges.

Police have identified Fawley as a "person of interest" but have not charged him in connection with Behl's disappearance.

Fawley, who reportedly admitted to a physical relationship with the 17-year-old Behl, met her when she visited the VCU campus earlier this year. Fawley also was reportedly with Behl the evening of Sept. 5.

Discovery of the body Oct. 5 on a farm property in rural Mathews County, some 70 miles east of Richmond, came exactly one month from the date Behl was last seen on the Virginia Commonwealth University Campus in Richmond.

Also, Wednesday, just prior to discovery of the body, Richmond police said a Grand Jury would hear evidence in the case. The Grand Jury may act in an investigative capacity. Witness are placed under oath and could face perjury charges if they are not truthful.

A task force is investigating the case. Virginia State Police are responsible for investigation of the remains. The FBI is processing the scene, a farm property that the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported had been visited by Behl.

Taylor Marie Behl, a 2005 graduate of James Madison High School, was a freshman at VCU. She was last seen at about 10 p.m., Sept. 5, when she left her dorm room, telling her room mate she was going skateboarding.

Behl was reported missing Sept. 7. Her car, a 1997 Ford Escort, was found 12 days later about a mile from the campus. The Virginia license tags had been removed and were replaced by Ohio plates, reported stolen some weeks earlier.

Since then there has been an ongoing criminal investigation in progress led by Richmond Police, VCU Campus Police, Virginia State Police, the FBI and the Virginia Attorney General's Office.
