QUOTE(DaTru KataLYST @ Sep 22 2005, 6:40 PM) sounds like a good ol' backstab to me ;O I'm politically Chinese, but I've culturally connected w/ China and Taiwan. Taiwan is fun (indeed!), and I think they should be able to be separate and China should just let go of old grudges. I would think the world will view China more diplomatically lovable these days if they said they would be "nice" and let Taiwan go. That's only my opinion, though. But gosh you know the basketball team whose name is "Chinese Taipei"? My friend wore the jersey to Southern Taiwan. How crazy is that?!! Part of Taiwan is against seperating. |

Taiwan=Republic of China (ROC)
China=People's Republic of China (PRC) China thinks Taiwan is part of PRC but Taiwan says it is an independent country. |

Taiwan and China are separated countries. Don’t you people ever found Chinese cookies plastic box that say “made in Taiwan”. This gives us an idea that it’s not part of China.

There's a small platform off the coast of Britain, and this guy claims its a country, but nobody recognizes it as a country. |

Taiwan is NOT part of China.
Taiwan is a Democracy where China is Communist. China's been trying to get Taiwan back for a very long time. But Taiwan is an independet nation with its own government. |

You see products that say "made in Hong Kong" as well but Hong Kong is not an independent country (just a Special Administrative Region). So, that doesn't really relate to whether Taiwan is part of Mainland China or not. The PRC government strongly objects to what they call "Taiwan independence", but to me, Taiwan has always been economically and politically independent from China since 1949. It's only that a lot of the countries that are friendly towards China do not recognize Taiwan as an independent country. |

"Taiwan has become the latest, er, country to go whining to Google Earth - not because the entertaining online service reveals high-res pics of air bases packed with black helicopters, but because those tiresome Americans insist on calling it 'a province of China'.
Oh dear, oh dear. A suitably indignant Taiwanese government has therefore asked Google to correct the outrage to read the Republic of Taiwan - despite the fact that, as Reuters notes, the island of 23 million souls is 'recognised by only 26 states in the world and has no seat at the United Nations'. Foreign ministry spokesman, Michel Lu, explained: 'It is incorrect to call Taiwan a province of China because we are not. We have contacted Google to express our position and asked them to correct the description.' Google has maintained a stony silence on the matter, presumably while it tries to work out a solution which will please both the Taiwanese and the hosts of the (lucrative, burgeoning, inviting) Chinese internet search business opportunity market. No doubt good sense will prevail, with Google siding firmly with Beijing and threatening to invade Taiwan if it attempts to declare itself a sovereign state while taking the intermediate measure of downgrading all existing satellite images of the island to 'developing world lo-res'--a fate reserved for only the mostly lowly of nations/provinces." It's kinda like Puerto Rico and America, no?
Puerto Rico is somewhat independent, but it is still a part of America. Puerto Ricans have U.S. Citizenship even. |

not really... pueto rico and the US are friendly.
chinese do not have to honor debts to tiawanese, there have been various trade embargos, etc. there is a bit of tension there... it would be like if california broke away from the US, we'd have tension. |
