Alrighty. I'm comparing plans for buying a domain with hosting and all of that, going down the BBOR list (aren't you proud of me? A CB user that knows how to use that! *rolls eyes*).
I'm going to use the main domain as a personal site/blog (I'm aiming toward something like www.beccary.com)... one of the subdomains will be for an invisionfree forum, and then normal subdomains, that type of thing. Anyhow, I'm not really sure what I'm looking for, plan-wise. Lower price equals better (lol), subdomains equals better, and more space equals better, to a point. I don't need gads of empty space I'm not going to use but have to pay for, but I want to make sure that I have more than enough for forums and personal stuff, etc and so forth. PHP and FTP are musts, I know that (even though PHP scares me, I'd need it for wordpress). Any advice? |

Get something with MySQL--you'll need that for WordPress, too. Also, if you have MySQL, you can use a phpBB webboard instead of Invisionfree, which is a bit nicer in my opinion (mainly because you have more control over it).

More information.
I've been looking around, and here seem to be some of the best. My intentions for this site are up in the first post (personal, a forum on a subdomain, etc). Maybe someone experienced could help me narrow down. --- http://www.bluehost.com + $6.95 / month (if 24 month subscription) + 4GB + free domain + unlimited email addresses + PHP, MySQL, ftp, etc + 20 subdomains -> my thoughts: more for a small business, with all of those email addresses? Not sure. http://www.fateback.com + $9.95 / month + 300 MB + 30 subdomains ( ![]() + free domain + pop/web mail + PHP, MySQL, ftp, etc -> not sure if I want to pay that much for my first website... http://netrillium.com + $3.00 / month + 150 MB + unlimited subdomains ( ![]() + unlimited add-on domains (what does that mean?) + PHP, MySQL, ftp, etc + unlimited email/webmail -> I'm no expert on space, is 150 enough for a personal site, forum, etc? --- The rest of the ones I could find didn't have the option of subdomains, which I REALLY want... so, what do you think? I'd really like some advice before I buy. Thanks! ![]() |

The only hosting company I've heard of from the ones you listed is netrillium.com. I've heard good things about them, but 150mbs seems a bit too little for a personal site AND a message board (especially if the message board ends up being extremely active).
Oh, and add-on domains are multiple domains you can add to your account, but those add-on domains work as subdomains [meaning no cpanel, etc]. I suggest https://www.surpasshosting.com :) I have heard nothing but good things about them (I haven't had any downtime since I've been with them & their support is excellent). Surpass Hosting's Standard Shared Plan Price: $4.94 / month Space: 2 GB Bandwidth: 30 GB Subdomains: Unlimited FTP Accounts: Unlimited Email Accounts: Unlimited MySQL Databases: Unlimited Fantastico, cPanel, ftp CGI/Perl, PHP/MySQL, Flash Support More info here |

Hey, thanks!
One question... the information you gave me (and I checked out the rest of the details) did not mention that the domain registration went along with it... if not, where is the best place to actually BUY the domain, and what is a reasonable price for a .com domain? |

^ No problem.
I always use godaddy.com, but that's $8.something per year. Oh, but you can register a domain name from http://myvaluehost.com for $4 a year. |

QUOTE(warriors1035 @ Sep 26 2005, 5:02 PM) ![]() ^ it says that on the site, but there's no link or anything to ANSWER that question. What IS the catch? edit: The other thing is, is there a huge difference between Windows/Linux hosting? I'm guessing it has nothing to do with the OS you have on your own computer, right? Is it true that Linux hosting is better? |

^ Do not go there. They have seriously bad reviews. I would google some of the site reviews so you can read them and by reading part of this one i suggest you stay away from it.

QUOTE(Szeh @ Sep 24 2005, 6:52 PM) as a warning, i've seen quite a handful of negative feedback for this host. some said the site was down for two weeks, others complained that they downsized the hosting plans even if you already paid for it as it's stated in the TOS. the only thing users said was good is the personal support, that's all. i'm looking for a good host, too, that's around $5/mo. I won't be able to afford anymore than that actually. ![]() |

Okay, personally I would go with Netrillium, cuz I bought my domain from them.
I think that it's good that they allow unlimitied subdomains and MySQL databases, but that's just me. I think the spacing is good, and they're a reliable host. It's also good cuz you can register domain names with them too ;x |

HOORAY!!
I just purchased a domain from My Value Host, and signed up for a year of hosting on SurpassHosting! Thank you Michelle for recommending those sites to me, they seemed to be the best deal. Fae, the domain was $4 and the hosting was $4.99 a month, if that fits your needs. I TOTALLY understand about the gas prices! So! http://www.melilyn.com should be up soon, and when it is, I'll throw quite the party! Thanks, guys! EDIT --- before this gets closed... Quick question... how long does it take before my domain is not "pending" and I'm able to work with it? |

QUOTE(eunie03 @ Sep 27 2005, 10:50 AM) Ah, thank you so much for the offer. Currently I'm only capable of a blogging site. I've been coding websites for while, I just can't seem to code for xanga. Again, I appreciate that you offered to help, but I actually want my own domain just for the heck of it. Yea, I'm so picky. I want my own domain and webspace with a constrained budget. Congrats, Meli! Remember to "showcase" it! The combo you mentioned is a good deal. I'll look into it, thanks! |

You need to change your domain nameservers to point to your surpass dns' which you should've received in the automated e-mail from them. I'm not familiar with MVH, but maybe it's the same with godaddy.. Just log into your account, select your domain, and look for where you can edit the nameservers. Once you get that done, it sometimes takes a couple of hours to 24/48 hours, pending the site and whatnot. If you've already changed the nameservers, you basically just need to keep checking on your website to see when it'll be ready, as you never truly know when they're propagated entirely. Glad you went with surpasshosting. I use them to host my reseller account, and have had an amazing time with them, out of all of the hosts I've been with. |
