Politicians sure love to talk about violent, bloody games like Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat, and Postal. I just finished reading this one article on PC Gamer (was bored) and despite what people like Hilary Clinton and Jack Thompson have been ranting about all this time, violent and firearm-related crimes and teenage homicides have actually declined even after the release of the Playstation, and is still lower than 20 years ago when 'violent' games like "Mario Bros." were coming out.

GameRevolution has written a similar article but using the same source:

http://gr.bolt.com/articles/violence/violence.htm

If you don't feel like reading, the whole essay can be summarized in the three charts below, taken by the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Statistics (or in other words, a good, reliable source):

So that means games develop a fantasy release so you don't go out and kill someone, instead you do it in a game...

games are a fantasy to begin with........ most who play games to much often do it to avoid the problems of everyday life...such as being teased having to socialize.....etc....games are somewhat of an outlet to stress / anger towards other people. And like my good friend stated above me...people who get pleasure from hurting people in games...often become game finatics...instead of serial killers... huh.gif

i'm a gamer myself....but never really thought of killing a man or stealing a car the same way GTA does. i guess it's more of the youth's mentality than just game influence. although i'm overly generalizing...usually if you give a gun to a volunteer red cross youth worker, they usually don't do the same things a juvenille would do if they had a gun. anyways..my point is, guns don't kill people. people kill people.

haha. we wrote an essay on this in social studies once.
no, i believe they don't. neither does music. kids usually beat kids up because they have a feud, or they're having a bad day and need to take it out on someone. kids get in fights because they hate eachother for stuppid reasons [i.e: i hate you cuz your white. i hate you cuz your black. i hate you cuz you gotz a mothereffing ugly haircut]
stuff like that. but, its not like they're getting in fights because they saw some pixelated dude shoot a gun.
this is for teens and older kids, however.

now younger kids are different. they have a tendency to copy things from games, because they think it's cool. my 5 year old brother is a game freak, and sometimes he comes up to me with one of his fake swords and says "IM GONNA SHOOT YOU CASSIE BOOM BOOM BOOM!!!" and goes crazy. why? i dunno. mabye its because they don't know that much about society yet, seeing as they haven't been in chool very long or whatnot.

eh, just my opinion...

I agree. I played LOTS AND LOTS of violent games (god of war, GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, Blood Rayne, etc...) and I never commited an act of violence (except towards my sister). Same with my friends. Only people who have certain "situations" immitate violent acts from a videogame. When I DO commit an act of violence, it's usually because that kid called me a goth and even if I never played videogames, I still know how to kill someone tongue.gif (well I haven't but I know how to).

Adults really misunderstand us. They think we do things because we think it's "cool" or because we want to be "center of everything" but really we do those things because we have a problem with a certain someone. Usually the reason why youths get violent is because of being tortured when inside the house or because of being neglected by a family... so it's not really videogames' fault.

Games do influence people just like everything else. Although I do agree with Mrs.Clinton on some extent, I still believe that only a few people actually perform what actually happens in the games.

Well to be honest I do believe games affect you big time, I mean I'm 18 and right after I play Halo I feel like shooting someone in the head. Also I still dress like a Jedi like they do in video games. I mean I would never kill anyone because I'm pretty much a nice guy, but it influences your mind and gives you ideas, although like I indicated before, it can also be used as a type of release so you don't go out wreaking havoc into the world.

Sure video games have an influence on the way people act... for example, how people dress, or how you talk... minor things like that... to say that video games will cause you to commit acts of violence is a little much...

^agreed. When you play a game, you may start acting a little like the character you are in the game.
I think kids know better than to kill people for fun.

I couldnt agree more with you. Video games do not cause youth violence, and whats more, they actually help with the imaginations of kids. Games bring people into worlds where anything is possible, and that in turn develops the thoughts that its possible to acheive something if you work hard enough....isnt that considered the "American Dream?" The military did a study on kids playing these violent video games and found out that they improve hand-eye coordination much better than kids that dont, they improve the decision making process under stressful conditions, and especially in wargames it puts a certain level of responsibility to "get your men safely through", all of which are good qualities to have, especially now that they are talking about the possibility of the draft being reinstated....and about the Mario Bros game...my MOTHER played that so often that she could beat the whole game and die maybe once, and i dont see her knockin off random people with sniper rifles or runnin people down in her car.... i think Hilary is still pissed off because when Bill was gettin head he was playin GTA. That's all I have to say for now.

Hey guys, just because YOU are not violent does not mean other people aren't either. In some cases, the violent games DID help these people along and give them ideas and develop the violent side of their minds. Now, they would have already had these ideas in their heads, but perhaps the games were the trigger they needed to follow through with it.

I agree the games don't cause violence in every single person, but I think they indirectly help with some. That doesn't mean I think we should ban them. Just saying. You guys are only using yourselves as examples, which doesn't convince anyone in the real world.

Hilary is a tard. shes all like violence in games are not good for children and are influencing them to do crimes and stuff. its not the games fault. its the stupid parents that buy their kids theses games. there is a rating system that is set and the parents who do buy theses games for their kids who are like 10 ignore the ratings. its their damn fault for doing that. thats why games like GTA or Halo have a MATURE rating and are not purchaseable by kids under 18 without an adult in their family like an older sibling or a parent. so shes a tard and thats final

Yep yep.

The solution is to not ban "violent" videogames, but to try to stop the problem from getting bigger, like when we see a kid at a young age already showing so much aggression.

Games doesnt cause violent. Children these days are lacking knowledge and logical thinking skills. They dont go outside and learn about the real world.

I dont mind kids pretending to be one of the characters from games. As long they are NOT meant to be hurtful or in a way of being lame.

Sooner or later, children will someday see knifes, scissors, broken glasses, blood, gang members, dead body at the funeral, and whatsoever.

I personally think ... parents are somewhat responsible for children's behaviors. Right? As a child, my parent spanked me to not to do "wrong" things without stating any reasons. Yes, i did lack logical thinking.

But who should train kids to be wiser?
