Since I was 12 I was basically forced to go to the gym since I was allready than 6'1 and had to go to the hospital since my back gave out, and physiotherapy.. SUCKED!!! Come from a line of tall people... Fifteen pounds of resistance a couple times a day with some band wouldn't do anyone any good so I started going to a gym...

Now im 13 6'4 and im starting to like it, and I really just like going there now to get stronger!!!

My question is, how long are you supposed to hurt after you workout?!? I've been for two weeks now, and I want to hear how you repair and some comments or what you think is happening to me.

So I got my membership renewed (have not been going for a month or so) and started working very much over the pace I would have if I never took a break going to the gym,

____________________________________________________________________

Now since its summer and busy I could only get a few exercises in that hour

bicep curls - 65 << I HATE working my biceps, it feels WEIRD to get the burn there

tricept down things - 130

trap push down - 140

pec fly - 250 (all the teenagers hog the bench upstairs with two 25 kg weights on each end... lol for them)

back machine - 120 or so (crappy back)

back pull down things (sorry I don't know the name of the machines... this is what the exercise does though cool.gif ) - 140

and the trap pull downs on the smith machine with the rope - 120

____________________________________________________________________

I don't gradually increase or reduce the weight, I just do as many as I can twice in one sitting, and when I get tired I hold the weight when I pull it down untill my arms give out. But I think that was the hardest i've ever worked out in one day.

It's been TWO WEEKS!!! I have not gone to the gym (summer events) since, and i'm STILL hurting!!! Not really hurting as it is the feeling of you've just gone to the gym after one day. The muscle has completely swelled down, just hurts when I stretch from the point here. Is it because im young? Has this happened to you?? Looking forward for responses from athletic / knowledgeable people.

And if someone does go to the gym, how big is your bicep flexed?? I'm allmost up to 17' (im 16' and a half allready cool.gif no joke lol)

I AM 13!!! I will start posting my pics if you guy's wanna see them, and yes a 13 year old with 16 inch biceps blink.gif

THANK YOU!!! sorry about the long post hope you didn't read it all

I WILL RESPOND BACK!!

And hey, im James, im new to the board :D!

Well, you probably shouldn't feel pain for that long.

Basically, the reason muscles hurt is because when you lift a lot of weight, you actually cause microtears in the tissue, and the body has to repair them.

Some people who lift don't feel any soreness at all. I generally don't, for example; you often won't if you stretch out enough. But a little bit of soreness is fine, which is why most people skip a day between visits to the gym, to let the muscle repair itself.

However, if you haven't worked out in a couple weeks, and you still feel sore, you may have overworked the muscle and caused too much damage.

That's seem to be true for overworking the muscle.

When i sort of over working on my muscle, it hurts on the next day. o.o
So, i cut it down a bit until it becomes waaay too easy. i'll have to add a bit more lifting. (It happens long time ago.)

If it's just soreness after weight training, I usually go to a sauna or heated whirlpool. That usually relieve a lot of soreness for me. Oh, tylenol or alieve may help if it's really bad. In your case though, two weeks is unusually long for your muscles still feel burned out. Since you have a gym membership, why don't you consult one of the trainers there? If that's not possible, try calling your doctor.

My brother told me that if I'm planning to work out but haven't done so in a while, I should take some Vitamin E before the work out. I guess you should research this a bit, but it worked for me time and time again!

*points and laugh* haha my bicep is only 10 inches biggrin.gif
Anyway, when I work out I feel the "burn" or whatever people want to call it for about 2 weeks but I still work out even when I feel that (ehh its hard) but after like a month, that goes away unless I take a break from working out.

vitamin e? Isn't that for your immune system not your muscles?

Drink a protien shake afterwards, that's what I usually do and it helps. I dont think it's normal for it to be hurting that much after 2 weeks, i would advise going to a doctor, you might have pulled/torn something

gradually increase the weight, not all at once...of course it all depends on what you're doing. I suggest you talk to a personal trainer. You may not need one after, but just meet with one so they can teach you how to figure out the schedule you can work out, and how much to increase weights, etc. Also, you can ask any possible question you can think of then.

Oh yea, and feeling the burn that many days after is generally bad, don't push yourself so hard, you may tear the muscle

ahhh, I found a source for that.

"If a weekend workout has you hobbling around the office Monday, you might want to reach for the bottle -- one of vitamin E that is." -CNN

tips:

dont work out every day, take 1-2 days in between each session
wait 10-15 min. before you go on to another set
dont overdo it
