I just felt like making this poll. I remember the first time I listened to heavy metal and I was like "This is so stupid. I mean, there is no musical value whatsoever" And my friends would be like "Ooh, I like this Slipknot song" or whatever and I'll be like "Sorry I don't like heavy metal"

But it's like totally different now. It's pretty much my favorite genre of music. Heavy metal gives you a sort of bad impression at first, but if you really listen to it, it's awesome. What do you think?

Well, the first thing that I heard that could be considered heavy metal or at least close was a Slipknot song in third grade. I remember I was just like "HOLY HELL!" and I ran off to look at their album and promptly bought it after hearing "Wait and Bleed."

So I guess I was the fourth choice -- "WOW. This is awesome, I can't believe what I've been missing!"

I had, however, grown up with the classics (Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Queen, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Pink Floyd, etc.), so I wasn't necessarily thinking "what have I been missing?", but I was pretty shocked.

When my brother first showed me Master of Puppets, my jaw dropped, and from there I began to explore music more.

My cousins introducted me to bands they listened to when I was little and I pretty much liked it. But when I was like in the 5th grade was when I really got into hard rock/metal music.

My first reaction to metal was akin to the 4th choice.

My dad introduced me to metal with Rob Zombie's song, "Dragula". I loved it, and instantly began my love affair with heavy metal, branching out to everything from Slipknot to Killswitch Engage.

I went with "this is pretty cool"

I grew up listening to oldies (Temptations, Gap Band, Eric Clapton, Jim Croce...) and classic rock (Eric Clapton, Cream, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, and many others)....This Will Give A More Accurate Depiction of My Musical Background....

In fourth grade, I inherited a collection of grunge and metal cds....Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Corrosion of Conformity, Pantera, Green Day....I had a collection....Iin 1994, I was cutting edge. happy.gif

In my freshman year of high school, I got into Mudvayne, Otep, Orgy, Deftones, Korn and tons of other nu metal bands. My sophomore year I got heavily into Mushroomhead, Killswitch Engage, In Flames, and lots of melodic hardcore and just hardcore in general. My junior year was all about punk and hardcore. My senior year I started listening to lots of foreign music, like Finntroll, Vintersorg, Falkenbach....and so on. I also started getting heavily into industrial music and synthpop during my junior and senior years of high school as well.

After I graduated, I started playing synth, making beats and getting really into stuff like The Faint, Radiohead, Sisters of Mercy, Mindless Self Indulgence, Mortiis....I'm also really into Queens of the Stone Age, The Caesars, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Dresden Dolls, Life of Agony and bunch of other wildcard bands.

I like heavy metal now, but it's not the same as liking Slipknot. To me, metal is more free than the format that bands like Slipknot and Mudvayne stick to. To me, they're hard rock. Metal is more like Children of Bodom, Finntroll, Darkthrone, Six Feet Under, Khold....and the list continues. Metal is hard and fast, but above all, it has a message. It conveys feelings not expressed adequately in other forms of music, such as anger, oppression, death, morbidity, violence. What keeps Slipknot and other "nu metal" bands from being metal is that there is nothing really shocking about what they say, at least not anymore. I remember when they first came out, they were different, unique and shocking. Now, they're just a rock band losing touch with reality. Good, but not great, at least not to me....

Keep in mind, all views stated here are solely mine and just opinion.

I'm pretty sure the first metal song I heard was Metallica and the guitar solo just made me go crazy.

My brother loved Manson. Thus, I grew up with it. And I love most anything metal with very few exceptions.

I'd really love to get into metal, I would, but when you're in middle school && heavy metal to these kids means, "Korn, Slipknot, Mudvayne && Metallica" I have to say, "Hell no!" It's not that I just think they're repulsive because of their appearance or anything. I admit, I enjoy Slipknot's "Wait && Bleed", but that's only one song. Metallica...I've listened to so many of their songs, but they're not quite what I'm looking for.

Anyone who mentions a metal band that I end up enjoying, will be my hero, serious.

When I was younger it used to really scare me. Now it's o.k. It's not my favorite genre but it's not the worst either.

Bodom does own....try Lamb of God, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, In Flames, Soilwork, Mnemic, Kataklysm, Arch Enemy, and Meshuggah....if you're into hardcore, screamo, or hard rock, those bands are probably the best place to start. They're an overview of melodic metal, NWAHM, and technical and death metal...if you like those, I know tons more...

Just to stay relevant.....metal is a solid genre, but I like more experimental metal, and old school stuff i.e. Priest, Maiden, Slayer, Death, and so on....

My first impression of Priest was that they sucked, but I saw them live and they put on a GREAT show. If you're into metal at all, then listen to them and give them a chance, they rule.
