Do people really say water closet?
*

I know the French do.

If there's a bathtub/shower, I'll call it a bathroom because that's what a bathroom means by definition. Everything else is a restroom. Homes usually have bathrooms (unless you have one of those 1 and 1/2 baths, the half would be a restroom).

In homes - bathroom
In public areas - restroom
On an airplane - lavatory. Haha.

Being a Pennsylvania, I can attest that I have rarely heard it referred to as a "lavatory", although some of my teachers called it that before; maybe it's an age thing.
