Sony is releasing hte newest firmware update to the sony psp on july 27th over in japan. its already the 27th over there right now but the jap psp site hasnt been updated.


SPECS

Just announced in Japan today, Sony's first major update to the PlayStation Portable operating system is packing some major features -- there are still a gaggle of requests that we have for other upgrades, but this 2.00 package goes a long way towards fixing the quirks and complaints users might have had about the system. The 2.00 update has some significant new features, and with a due date in Japan of July 27th in Japan (with a NA release likely soon after or the same day), these cool features might be yours in the very near future.
Sony Computer Entertainment has released a list of the features to be included in PSP v2.00, and we have translated and pulled out details on these in the list below. Once it's available, you can get the 2.00 update either by downloading it from a hotspot to your PSP, by uploading it from your PC via USB after grabbing the file from SCE's service, or by updating with a PSP game with 2.00 included. Here's what's in the package:

    * NETWORK - Internet Browser - The biggie of the bunch, a new browser function has been added to the PSP so that you can connect to a website any time you are in the area of a compatible / accessible WiFi hotspot. The browser supports standard 4.01 HTML, but will not support Flash (although it is listed what sounds to be a sniffer function for Flash to show when it is requested but not available ... might it be part of the PSP brower someday?)
    * NETWORK - New Network Menu - This is where the web browser will be housed. The icon for it will be a globe, and it'll cycle in with the music note, film frame, and game logos.
    * VIDEO - Jump Feature in UMD Video/Music - Yes, it doesn't sound nearly as interesting as our original translation of "Performance Jump." It's a new skipping feature in UMDs, perhaps direct chapter access control or something to that effect.
    * VIDEO - A-B Repeat Mode - A handy feature for watching clips you like, this feature allows UMD Video, Music or Memory Stick videos to repeat your favorite scenes
    * VIDEO - 4x3 Video Mode of Memory Stick Video - We're not sure what this accomplishes, as videos were already 4x3. The only way for videos to be bigger and wider was to cheat the system and stretch would-be 4x3 pixels in odd ways with alternate apps.
    * VIDEO - Audio Adjustment Function of Memory Stick Video - Seems to be muting and gain controls for when your homemade videos are not the way you want.
    * VIDEO - MP4 (AVC) Playback - This is the good stuff. Homemade PSP videos have so far been hobbled by limited codec implementation and an adherence to a regulated Memory Stick standard. Instead, the PSP is finally allowed to branch out and play more complex, high-quality video in the advanced h.264 codec. Exact implementation of the AVC codec may still depend on certain variables, but get your compressors ready.
    * MUSIC - ATRAC3plus Support on PRO Duo - Correcting a silly technical gaff in the Memory Stick format, music fans can now put ATRAC3plus files on their PSPs. (SonicStage v3.2 software is required.)
    * MP4 AAC & WAVE Support - The PSP can now play MP4 audio (MP4's AAC format) as well as Linear PCM WAVE files.
    * PHOTO - Wallpaper Feature - We're guessing this is the much-requested feature for taking your favorite pictures and smacking them in the background of the PSP menu. There's no mention of a randomizer or anything else that would make this feature even more cool, but at last, something other than that swishy swirl on this month's color.
    * PHOTO - Picture Sending - You can now trade photos with other PSP owners over an ad-hoc (local) wireless connection
    * PHOTO - New Formats - The PSP can now read TIFF, GIF (we're not sure about animated GIF yet) and BMP files.
    * SETTING - Korean Language - A new language option on the menu. That'll be nice for them
    * SETTING - New Character Set - No details available on this -- hopefully, this is a quick-select for punctuation and other hard-to-type characters.
    * SETTING - Theme Setting - No details.
    * SETTING - Internet Browser Restriction Setting - A set of options for configuring the access your PSP has to the net, presumably your cookie and personal security handling.
    * SETTING - WPA Support - If WEP isn't secure enough for your home, you can now access PSP with WPA-PSK (TKIP.)
    * SETTING - Web Support on Keypad - It's unfortunately not as cool as it sounds (we were hoping for USB keyboard support to be added, as there are a couple of USB manufacturers with mini-keyboards on deck.) The old dial-a-letter keyboard will be the input for the web browser.

Version 2.00 is a free update for PSP, and has a lot of features to help put the PSP in even better shape as a multimedia machine. The only issue with the update, of course, is that the security updates in previous updates will carry over to the newest version -- that means that the homebrew and EMU applications that are running wild in the PSP underground will be locked out in the newest edition. Hackers are notorious for finding a way where there is a will, and the will of the PSP gamer to get all of these features in their system without losing some of the cool extra apps will certainly be a driving force. However, cracking the security of the PSP in version 2.00 won't be as easy as it was with the swiss cheese early PSP versions, so it is unknown when or if any of that access will be returned. Since homebrew/hacker applications have also allowed access to pirated PSP games (copies of many games have unfortunately already been ripped off and posted up), that's just how Sony wants it, and they will certainly keep seeking to lock down their system.

Whether or not there will be a winner in that game of cloak and dagger, these features are handy and much-needed upgrades on the system for general users, so look for news on availability in North America of the 2.00 update soon.

Q: How do I install 2.0?
A: First, make sure you have a PSP folder on your memory stick. Then find GAME inside the PSP folder. If its not there then make one in ALL CAPS. Then make an update folder in all CAPS. Your directory should be (where x is your drive letter for your psp) X:\PSP\GAME\UPDATE\ . Then put your eboot from this link: 2.00 firmware update. Then run it from GAME>MEMORY STICK> UPDATE on the home screen.

Q: On my American PSP, will the buttons be switched when I update with the 2.00 firmware update?
A: Simple answer no.

Q: Will I be able to play American UMDs and Music on my US PSP if I upgrade with the JPN update?
A: Yes you will! There are no effects because the JPN update is just basically a universal update.

A: Go all the way to the right AFTER upgradeing and then you'll see a WWW globe. Click the internet browser.

A: This is from nopenope Yes, turn off WLAN Save, and change the encoding to Western in the tools section of the browser. To change encoding... make sure your on the toolbar. Press X on the square thing with an A. Select the second option -- Encoding. Press X. Scroll down to the 3rd option -- Western (ISO-8859-1). Press X. Press triangle and surf away faster ;-).

Q: I get corrupted file while trying to update.
A: Make sure your update folder is in all caps.. UPDATE.

Q: When using the browser I get an error message saying out of memory.
A: To fix it... click Triangle so it shows the 2 bars from top and bottom. Then go to the little toolbox that says tools. Press X on it and go to the first option -- Settings. Press X on Settings. Then scroll down to the last option -- Cache Settings. Press X. Then press X on whatever setting you have there and put it to DO NOT USE. Press the OK button. And then press the O button. Now press O again. Press X on the toolbox again and choose the 3rd option -- Delete Cache. Press X. A confirmation box will pop up. Press X on YES. Then just exit the browser with O (pressing it twice). It will ask you to close the internet browser. Just press X. Wait until it loads to the PSP OS. Now go back to the internet browser and see if you have any issues now. If you get it once in a while.. just refresh...

Q: How do I use yahoo mail?
A: Go to yahoo.com and click mail. Login and it'll say you have an old browser. Click the link that says "Switch back to the Yahoo! verison supported by your current browser".

Q: How do I use gmail?
A: It works fine, its just text based.

A: Hotmail works fine.. just go to hotmail.com

Q: If i have 1.5 or 1.51 firmware... do I need to get the firmware after the version?
A: If you have 1.5 then yuo don't need to upgrade to 1.51 and then 1.52 and then 2.0... just update to 2.0 and you'll be updated. Also with the 1.51 firmware..

Q: I can't find the sonicstage program to convert MP3 to the PSP format for audio... where is it?

Q: What is the Theme setting in the options of the PSP?
A: It so you can make it if it was a different month.. it changes most of the colors... not really useful...

Q: How do I add a background?

A: Get a compatible JPG background for the PSP, it has to be 480x272 or smaller and save it into your PSP/PHOTO folder. Then go to the photo section of the psp and click it and click triangle so it shows the options... find set as wallpaper and confirm. Then you will have it as your wallpaper.
Q: How do i get media?

    * Ok,first you need to find a link to a .Mpeg4/.MP3/.Wav file
    * Type the address(link) in your psp's URL bar
    * place your pointer(psp) over the link
    * press triangle
    * go to FILE(first option from left to right)

Q: Is there tabbed browser?
A: HELL YEA THERE IS!! To switch.. hold square and press the L trigger or R trigger. You'll see the colored bars at the top get bigger for each tab. When it fills with color that means its loading. To use the tabbed browsing just switch to a blank one... press file and click address for your to type in an address. To switch back.. hold square and press L trigger or R trigger to find your right page. When yuo see a popup for when u click something.. like PMS for example.. a confirmation prompt will pop up saying " would you like javascript to open up another page?" when you click yes, switch to the other page with square and L or R triggers.

Q: How do i share images with another person next to me?

    * Go To PHOTO
    * Select The Photo You Want To Send/Share with another PSP
    * Press Triangle
    * Select SEND(icon with the "wireless" thingy)

    * Go To Any Picture

When the amreican version releases, you can upgrade the jap. 2.0 to the latest american version just as you could upgrade 1.0 to 1.5. I will upload screen shots of 2.0 working on a US psp

Well now you lose customer support from Sony.

Although there is so far little cause for alarm (the update is naturally designed for multiple regions, and previous versions of the PSP updater have been virtually identical across territories), Sony will not be able to provide customer support for the PSP 2.00 update since it is only available in Japan at this time. Users with North American PSP systems are recommended to not install the Japanese update. If you already have v2.00 installed, you should be fine (very few users are reporting errors besides minor networking glitches with PSP v2.00, and an IGN board reader who spoke with  a with SCEA customer service rep was told that the update is not necessarily hazardous, just not recommended for PSPs released here), but you will have to wait for the NA release of 2.00 or later before you are able to receive support for your PSP.

im not saying that you have to dl the file, im just sharing the info

ive had mine and everyone else on the boards(playstation online) have also, and nobody has found any problems

I thought the US update hasn't even been released yet. Some guys one 1up's boards had problems. I guess it's hit or miss. But if I pay $250 for something, I don't want to give up customer support.

^^ i guess. It all depends on what type of person you are. If you go for the customer support to fix problems then i guess you should wait for the US update.

but, if you just dont give a fck, and wanan update ASAP (like me) then the update should impress you. its not the best update, cause... it still doesnt have the cool little things like an organizer/calendar, etc. but the web browser is kool, i played with it, untl i got tired of not having a keyboard.



Oh, and the US update hasnt been released yet, but most people came to the conclusion of it being the same file seeing how the previous updates were the exact same file minus the language settings. (which you can change after installation)
