yeah sometime i dun't care if they just accidentally kall me "viet" or japanese" wen i'm really filipina. but this one time wen this girl was yelling at me.. jsut cuz i accidentally bumped into her wen i was late.. she turns around and yells at me.. and say.. "You freakin chinese b(censored)" and that just got me mad.. but i didn't have time to deal with her.. so i gues i'm okai wen they do it on accident in a niice way.. but wen they want to pull it off wen they want to say something mean about ya.. that' just ticks me off.

I've been called a Japanese by a Chinese lady when I'm of the same ethnicity as she does. How ironic.

I can't really tell if people are Chinese/Japanese/Viet/etc...just as I'm sure you can't tell what country I hail from.
So..cut some slack. |

Everyone asks if my sister is Chinese or Asian. She's Italian and Puerto Rican.
but I could see how it would offend you. Even though all hispanics are called mexican and all blacks are called african-american. |

^ Well, to be fair, Africa isn't a country, it's a continent, and black people did come from there.
But hey, no one refers to me as German. How offensive! ..Ya know? People would think I was stupid if I actually thought that. Like, I don't know what country each person came from..to me, all asians look alike, all black people look alike, all hispanics look alike..and sorry if that's offensive, but I'm sure to all of you who aren't white, all white people look alike. |

^...not all black people look alike...i could say, hmm...you look jamaican, you look south african...and yes sometimes i can tell the difference, not all white people look alike either...i can tell the difference btw a Dutch man and a belgian...
Certainly NOT all asians look alike...Indians don't look chinese nor do pakistanis look japanese... But i get confused with chinese, japanese, filipinos, singaporeans and yeah... |

The offensive part is that folks assume that asian people are chinese and all hispanic people are mexican as if there aren't any other asian or hispanic countries. It's just very stupid and gets very annoying. At least when the person asking you is of a certain age who should have already studied a world map before.

^(to Sandra) They do to me. You're half and half, it's not surprising it's easier for you to tell. I have absolutely no idea what country each asian, black, or hispanic person hails from, and I have no problem admitting that because it's true, just as you couldn't tell what country most of me is from if I didn't tell you. No one ever told me how to tell the difference. Like, if someone simply asks, "Are you Chinese?" you shouldn't take such large offense. If you just tell us not to ask it, we won't ask it. Yelling at us and causing a fight over it doesn't help anything, because to our knowledge, all we did was ask a simple question so we would know for the future. Before I came to Createblog, every Asian was Chinese or Japanese. I didn't know any Asians before I came here. As a young kid, the only places you know are America, Mexico, China, and Africa. So that's what you grow up thinking. It's embedded in your mind, just like "don't say cuss words" is. However, the more people tell others it's not like that, the more that will become embedded in your minds.
go pogo its fun: you don't know what country i hail from, right? a robot ate kim: um.. no go pogo its fun: you can't tell by looking at me? a robot ate kim: er.. See? Now should I be offended by that? Like, I understand why it's offensive, but I don't know why it's such a big deal. If someone has a swatstika on their arm, I'll probably be like, "Woah, OK, I probably shouldn't talk to them.." I'm not gonna go yell at them. If they think that Jews are the scum of the Earth, so be it. I'd probably befriend them and then later tell them I'm a Jew and prove them wrong, but even though a swatstika is really, really offensive, he doesn't know the difference. It's sad that he doesn't, but he doesn't. He probably grew up knowing that, and there's nothing I can do to change that. |

Sammi, it's different for you. It's not like we have to go up to someone and ask them if they can tell what our nationality is. Some people just call us Chinese. We're not asking everyone to know the difference but to stop lumping all Asian people in the "Chinese" category and all Hispanic people in the "Mexican" category.
And I think when people grow up, they should realize that these things that have been embedded in their brains as a child don't make logical sense. I mean, obviously, not every Asian person comes from China and not every Hispanic person comes from Mexico... that is if you've studied a world map or a globe. |

^(to Kimi) You mean nationality? Cause Viet isn't a race..it's a nationality.
K, so I'm only 25% German. Kimi, can you tell what other countries I'm mixed with? There's another that's also 25%. Apparently this shouldn't be hard. |

Well, just like we don't understand why it's such a big deal, you guys don't understand why people do it.
go pogo its fun: now there's a thread about how offensive it is to call someone chinese when they're not. micha eldi ppery: That's offensive? go pogo its fun: yea. micha eldi ppery: Don't people just sometimes make mistakes? go pogo its fun: if i asked an asian person if their chinese or not, that's really bad. go pogo its fun: because i'm supposed to know. micha eldi ppery: I haven't seen that thread, which forum is it? go pogo its fun: the lounge. micha eldi ppery: I haven't gotten there yet. micha eldi ppery: I just got back home. go pogo its fun: and people are all mad. go pogo its fun: cause i'm like "ok seriously, i don't know the difference, so cut me some slack." go pogo its fun: just like they wouldn't know i'm german and austrian, mostly. micha eldi ppery: True See? He's an extremely smart kid, and he just never knew. People don't know, and people can't get so worked up about it. I'm sure at least half of the people in this thread have also called Hispanic people Mexican and didn't even realize it. To the others I haven't been talking to on AIM - Lillian had mentioned how she later learned because she lived in a heavily populated Asian area. What about people like me? IRL, I've only had a conversation with one Asian my entire life. If I had never come to Createblog, I would have never known. |

Sammi, I think you're missing the point. You're not expected to know. We don't get mad because people don't automatically know which country we're from. We get mad because people just assume were Chinese as if China we're the only country in Asia. And it shouldn't take a heavily Asian populated area for people to realize that there are other Asian nationalities out there. |

^ Yeah, I agree.
I know it's annoying and at school I'm asked at least once a day if I'm chinese and it seriously gets annoying, but these people are just curious. How are people who aren't asian supposed to tell if you're Vietnamese or Chinese or Filipino? A majority of the asian race in the US, I'd assume is Chinese, so they probably use that as an 'asian standard'. I'm Vietnamese and not a lot of people in my grade at least have even heard of that ethnicity, so it's a bit tougher for me. This is a normal conversation of everyday life. Them: Are you Chinese? Me: No Them: Japanese? Me: No Them: YOU'RE INDIAN!? Me: No, you idiot. I'm Vietnamese. Them: What's that? Me: Ever heard of the Vietnam War? Them: Ohhhh Yeah, it's a bit frustrating, but get over it. ![]() |
