Sorry, if this is a little bit off topic. How come people start saying good things about others when they're missing? Like, Natalie Holloway. She had a good GPA. Blah blah blah. She was a good person. When in reality, she's probably some ditzy, conceited, person. Understand this is a hypothetical thought. So that I won't spam, I think that Natalie Holloway doesn't deserve all this attention.

i doubt it matters.
she's either dead.
or shes a sex slave in the mediteranian or southeast asia.
either way; i think she's not ditzy anymore.

but she was a goody goody prep, i presume.

Yeah, I see your point. I was wondering the same thing. At a funeral, whether this person was respectable or not, they'd always take that time to mention the good things. Why? I'm guessing because it's just to pay respects to the dead. It's the least you could do once they're gone. All you have left are memories of this girl (since she's presumably dead), so why not keep good memories? And her parents are probably in denial that she's dead and are like, "She'll come back soon. She's a good girl." I actually don't care though, so enough of my off-topicness.

I agree. It makes me sick how the news picks favorites with the stories they cover. If Natalie was an ugly girl with nothing going for her, no one would care.

It reminds me of that episode of The Simpsons where Bart pretends to be trapped in a well, and when everyone thinks it's Timmy, they're all concerned and spending lots of money to get him out.. But when Bart falls in and everyone knows it's him, nobody cares and suddenly they can't afford to get him out.

Saying this may be a little sadistic, but I lost a friend a while back in a car accident; she was hit by a drunk driver. She wasn't what one would call attractive, but she was smart and she was a great person. The news could care less. Not long afterward, my fiancé's beautiful ex-girlfriend Amanda drove into a tree on a completely empty road and it's all over the news. What?!

That being said.. Sometimes I just absolutely hate the media.

That's another thing that gets on my nerves. The same thing happened when Ronald Reagan died. There were tributes and everyone talked about how he was such a great man, and these were the SAME PEOPLE who bashed him to pieces during his presidency. Now, I never had a problem with the man, but my opinion of him didn't change because of his death. And when Amanda died, even my boyfriend was joining in on the saying wonderful things about her - he HATED her. People should just always be real, no matter what.

^ Wow, you make a lot of good points. I know exactly what you're talking about and now that I think about it, it's entirely unfair. However, this isn't really a debate considering we're all just putting our opinions on here and more 'talking' about it than 'debating'. Well, at least I learned something new.

Pretty people get more publicity than ugly people.

Why? Because the media sucks and in my opinion it's kind of offensive that they be so judgemental of people and decide whether or not they're worth being put on the news or not. And if they were to judge someone, why on their outer appearance?

Libertie, you're going to kick some major ass on the debate forum.

I noticed that, too.. We're all just pretty much agreeing with each other in this thread. I guess this is just a tough topic to make a case against. :P

It's incredible how people write about Natalie Halloway's case and not show any emotions...I guess none of you are parents! It's true! lots of people go missing daily but that doesn't mean that you guys have to be so mean!

It'll get tired out soon enough.

You know, kind of like how the car bombs in Iraq don't stir the American public anymore.

So true. Although, it is strange it's like a good horror movie that has its viewers on the edge of their seats, esepcially it's teens, who see the typical american girl, whose rich, wander off and gets herself murdered, they view here as the pure one.

It scares me.

It's not like we're trying to be mean and I sympthasize with the girls parents. But when my cousins friend was kidnapped, they were never on the news. It's sad that they only chose stories they THINK will intrest the public.

I cannot believe that all of you can sit there and ridicule someone you don't even know (you're comments about her being pretty, smart, goodie-goodie, etc just show your lack of self esteem and the need to ridicule others). I am a middle-class white person and I certainly hope that I never get this caddy about things.

Think about the media attention the celebrities get each and every day. It's something that draws the attention of many people and the media is only doing what they are paid for. Do you think the Hallaway family is paying the media to report on this story? Doubt it! It's called genuine interest from people that care when bad things happen. Unfortunately, all of you are focusing on the fact that this kind of attention is not given to the cases in your local community or your life. There are horrible things that happen each and every day and unfortunately they do not get the attention they all deserve. Is that Natalie's fault? Unfortunately, I fear the end result is not going to be favorable for Natalie and all you people can do is complain that your life doesn't get any attention! Give me a break. I think the reason it is getting so much attention is because of the people involved in Aruba (a court judge and his son). It's more media attention for Aruba. Dirty politics always grabs the attention of the public. And yes, she is a pretty girl and had a lot going for her but I don't think if she was ugly this would have gotten any less attention than it is for Natalie.

As a parent, my heart goes out to the Hallaway family and I hope that they can eventually find some peace to this horrible event. I can't imagine what they are going through being in a different country and having the investigation at the mercy of a law enforcement system that runs very differently than things do in the US. I think they have shown great courage and strength throughout this whole process even though in their hearts they know things are not going to end in their favor.

And for the girl that wants to "pretend" to go missing, go for it! I just hope you do get the attention you deserve after pulling a stunt like that. And you should be thankful that you do not have to endure what Natalie more than likely did with her abductors. Hey, at least you will get your "10 seconds" of fame. I am pretty sure this is NOT the "10 seconds" that Natalie was hoping for!

the only reason we seem to have no sense of compasion for this girl is because we grew up this way. We dont get emotionally attached to something unless it involves us, i know it may seem really harsh but its how kids right now grew up, since obviously you yourself are a parent. The media made us like that. I prayed for them to find her, and thats the only contribution in my mind that i could give, and i still hope they do find her.

Originally most humans are greedy and self involved, If someone was yelling rape i doubt that you would go down there with a bat and try to help, No. as long as you and your family are safe thats it.

ex. the famous case of Kitty Genovese. She was raped in an alley of apartments surrounding her. Nobody Helped her when there was in fact 38 witnesses from the Apartment complex. Nobody even called the police. None. As soon as she had an opportunity to yell rape the rapist ran away. And then he came back when nobody came down and he finished the job of stabbing her.

Its not that we are mean but its because we are so tired of this bs. If it were to be a middle class african 18 year old stuck in aruba i dont think she would get as much as attention.

Fox news and the Republican power elite, are geniuses. They have a greater understaning of the american mind set than the liberal media.

Short attention spans, sensationalism, unable to recognize the difference between news and entertainment, escapist tendancies, laziness regarding analysis of really important issues ( let someone else figure it out for me). Thus we get NATALIE HOLLOWAY and the rich guy who fell off the cruise ship etc etc.
Meanwhile forces are at play that will dramatically effect each and everyone of our lives and the lives of future generations. Terrorism, energy, Supreme Court Appointees, White House National Security Leaks, . But just give us more Natalie, Geraldo, and throw in some Nascar.
The summer leading up to 9/11, the top TV news stories were SHARK ATTACKS ( two people were attacked).. A month later 3,000 people were killed. And is it no wonder that the averge person STILL thinks Sadaam Hussein was involved in 9/11?
We are in deep DOO DOO.

BRINGING BACK TOPIC.

Now that Aruba hasnt found natalie holloway yet, the U.S. is planning to boycott aruba. Do you think that is right? I mean just because they havent found her they are going to cut off tourists in which the businesses like the resorts and restaurants in Aruba and they have to suffer for something they didnt do. They think that in doing this the Aruban government will get pressured to find her.

I dont think they should suffer in my opinion. I mean they have nothing to do with the dissappearance of natalie.

Do you think they should be able to do this ? should other businesses suffer for her dissapearance? Should America enforce the way their governemnt works on another country?

I agree. I personally feel like cases like this are treated unfairly. there has been many cases of kidnappings of black/asian/hispanic children but they aren't focused on as much as cases that involve white people do. I remember reading something like this in a newspaper. the goverment is so coruppted and unreasonable.

i dont' think it's a race issue.

it's more of a class issue. she was upper class, and thus news covered it.

i'll bet you if a rich black girl got abducted you'd hear about it, probably more than a rich white girl too.

I cant believe some of the stuff you guys are saying...SHE SHOULD BE GETTING MORE PUBLICITY IF ANYTHING! And maybe its b/c her parents are pushing the publicity b/c they cant sleep at night b/c they dont know if their daughter is alive or dead and if she was raped and if she was tortured or ANYTHING! And Aruba should be boycotted for the shady shit they are pulling over there...I wouldn't step foot on that island now or ever b/c of how disgusted I am by the way they are handling this case...and for those of you who think she is getting too much publicity should think again, there is no worse feeling then not knowing where one of your loved ones is and coming to terms with the reality that you will probably never see them again!YOUR COMMENTS WERE SO IGNORANT!

How are they handling it badly? They investigated. There are laws, even in Aruba, about just arresting people and throwing them in jail without evidence.
