So my fiance and I were watching the Diamonds Are Forever music video (by Kanye) and he asked me, that if I was given a diamond necklace, and I knew where it had came from, how children had slaved over mining it, would I still wear the necklace?

I actually thought over it, but I couldn't answer. pinch.gif

So, same question. Would you buy a diamond necklace (or watch, whatever) if you knew that children had been through so much pain mining it?

I wouldn't buy a diamond necklace period. If I had money like that I would buy conflict free diamonds.

i wouldn't...besides someday diamonds are going to be worthless, the people who own the mines in africa control how many diamonds are exported so they have a monopoly and can control how much diamonds are worth.

the nice person in me wants to say that I'd sell the necklace and send the money to a poor country, but the real person in me says that (god if I even had a place to wear a diamond necklace) I'd probably wear it, especially if it was a gift. People I know can't afford diamond earrings, let alone necklaces, so if someone had given me the necklace I'd know they had gone through a lot to get it and I just couldn't not wear it.

I would. Someone special spent a lot of money on that for me; it would be rude to them if I didn't. There's plenty of things that people/animals go through pain for. However, it's part of our lives.

And I'm sure Kanye West has NEVER worn diamonds. rolleyes.gif

I wouldn't...I'm not really used to wearing diamond necklaces, so It wouldn't really be difficult not wearing it.

I personally wouldn't want to wear diamonds, because I'm not the kind of person who likes sparkly diamonds on me...I'd rather just wear a cute necklace from Express or something. Anyhow. If I did like wearing diamonds, I probably wouldn't buy it then, but if someone gave it to me, then maybe.

I don't really like diamonds.
You have to know it's just made of the atoms (carbon) that are used to make charcoal.

Well I love jewelry so I probably would buy it.. I mean it is the governments fault that the children have to work like that to get some money to feed their families so Ill leave the politics to them... Sorry if that was rude but opinions are opinions

No, absolutely not. If I knew of that situation before, I wouldn't give it a second thought. It really does pain me that children have to go through that, just so we can wear something maybe three times a year.

Actually thats a good point. but i think after he made the song, someone told him about the situation in Africa, so thats why he changed the title for the video to "Diamonds Are Forever (from Sierra Leone)" instead of just "Diamonds are Forever". At least thats what Kanye said on Access Granted. So you never know he probably does not wear diamonds anymore. But to answer the question I would not buy it for myself, but if someone got them for me then sure Id rock it.

Nope, 1. I'd feel guilty. 2. I can't afford it/if I could, what a waste of my money. But if someone gifted it to me and I cared about them, wellll...
