I like the Mars Volta. L'via L'viazquez...oh my god!! John Frusciante (guitarist for Red Hot Chili Peppers) is the guitar god. I dont think the widow was their best work, but again I've only heard Mars Volta when they released "Frances the Mute", and also L'via is like 15 min. long. Mars Volta shows more of the feature of being an artist than an entertainer.
