do you think the penny should be discontinued indefinitely?
(if they are no longer used.
their values still hold.
ppl get their money back.
rounding occurs.)

pennies should be dicontinued because...
rolls of 50 pennies cost 60 cents.
slow checkout lines (due to pennies) = lost productivity
US Mint has to create more pennies because ppl either throw them in the streets or keep them in jars at home (apparently, the Mint has some way of keeping track of the amount of pennies in circulation)
US Mint spends .81 cents on minting a penny. Pennies are only a little bit more than that, so US Mint spends more money on pennies than other coins.
Pennies are a hassle
Cant be used in vending machines or public transportation
People face ridicule when they take out a bag of pennies to pay for something

pennies should be continued because...
they are part of tradition
rounding would increase price and consumers would have to suffer the blow
charities rely on pennies for donations
zinc and copper makers will suffer (pennies are made of zinc and copper)

what do you think?

sorry i have to do this.... i wonder tho, where you got your information?

50 pennies = 50 cents. go into a bank with 2 quarters, walk out with 50 pennies. why the hell would it cost you 60 cents to get 50 pennies?

the metal used in US coins is always more expensive than the face value of the coin. this is the anti-counterfitiing device used in coins.

I love pennies. They are unique. they are the only not silver coin, and the only coin with a president facing the right. besides, lincoln was arguably one of the greatest president we ever had. On another note, people do use pennies all the time. And if something cost 1.96, they wouldnt round it down to 1.95, they would round it up 2.00. It may not seem like much, but if you have 30 items all priced that way, you are losing over a dollar. Plus, they would have to change the amount of tax because theres no way 8.25 will always round to a 5 or 0. Then they would just be rounding up more and making you lose MORE money. And a roll of pennies does NOT cost 60 cents. I know because I work in retail and we have to do change orders. %0 cents equals 50 cents. you dont see them chargin you 60 dollars for 50 one dollar bills do you? Thats faulty information ya got there. Leave the penny alone. :D

i so agree they are very unique and very valuable (not monetarily, historically) if they discontinue the penny would they have to change the display of the HUGE penny below the lincoln monument in DC

Lbjshaq, I'll try to be as cordial as I can when I tell you: please, do not spam the debate forum with one or two sentence replies. Please, try and use a little substance or evidence in your responses. Or at least try and contradict someone. That's what a debate is all about, right?

No, not really. You spammed about six threads with one or two sentence remarks.

That's clearly an infringement on the rules.

Absolutely.

1) 'Is America' thread.

iraq hates us bcuz we are trying to change their way of life but the rest of the world hates us bcuz we are trying to be peacemakers and they think that we should just stay out of it

A very short reply, without much substance, repeating exactly what everyone else said.

2) 'Reality' thread.

i dont know what exactly this is about but i no reality tv is not real reality

A very short reply, without much substance, and doesn't relate to the topic at all.

3) 'Money' thread.

yeah pennies are annoying but i dont think they should be discontinued

A very short reply, without much substance, that does not provide any reasoning.

You get the point. Try and cut down on those types of replies. Feed the debate, my friend.
