Music DL Now Illegal, hm..? Options

Im sure there are topics on this but, i have some new info from my dad XD so trustful eh? He said that a new law was passed, illegalizing music downloads off of sites, programs, and anything else. Itunes and relations will be only aloud ones. You can download off Limewire, except government has put up fake music for you to download, so then they have access yo your computer. When they do this they are able to get your ip then track you down easily.

So i reccomend you not use them. But i have downloaded tons of music off limewire.... it would suck if it was shut down and stuff. Is this true? You tell me because my dad told me and.... I dunno he could be trying to keep me from downloading music from limewire. But wasnt there a law trying to illegal LimewirE? But then it failed to pass? hmm..... and suggestions of thoughts?

ya like a music file that LOOKS totally real but when you download it, it hakcs ur computer and messes it up.

no fake music files are music files that look real. are in mp3 format, about the same mb size, and then when you play it..all you here is blank or static and nothign else. =\

Well, not really. It's still illegal--it always has been. Companies can still sue individuals for copyright infringement; it just means that they can sue the distributors of filesharing software, too.

It's unlikely, but you can technically still be sued, yes.

Funny thing is, it's illegal for anyone to try to find me as I'm downloading, since IP addresses are now considered to be protected information, just like social security numbers and the like. It's kind of funny how they're making laws simultaneously that counteract one another.

And another funny (as in: enraging) thing is that they're also implementing a tax for mediums for electronic files (such as blank CDs, MP3 players, etc) at the same time as they're making the downloading of said files illegal. So in other words, you're paying a tax for something you're not even allowed to do! Talk about having your cake and eating it too.

I don't think IP addresses qualify as protected information. You broadcast your IP anytime you go online, and it's useful--even necessary--for a lot of sites to record it. It doesn't give away any personal information, either, so I don't see why it would be protected anyway.

you can always check to see if the file is fake while your downloading it, just double click on it for a preview, and if it's all static, stop downloading. They can only catch you if you download the whole fake version.

Fake files are just meant to discourage downloading; that's not the only way used to track filesharers.

a law like that was passed a while ago. This is why I dont download anymore. And its the RECORD COMPANIES that are putting out the corrupeted music files, not the government. I would advise against downloading off the internet because they can trace it back to your computer and you can get a fine of over 1,000 dollars. This I do know. It was in the Dallas morning news probably a year or so back, because its happening to a lot more people than you realise. Besides, have a little respect for the people who make that music, Yeah I know, celebrities seems to ahve sooo much money, but they have to invest theire money, and so do the record companies to make that music, plus its a lot of time and hard work. Making music is stranuous as hell. Especially on your voice, which is your money maker. Trust me, I know, because I record in the studio every 2 weeks, and thats hard enough. But yeah, I wouldnt be caught downloading music for free online if I were you guys. The consequences arent worthit. Just go to ebay and buy the cd for 3 bucks.

so...hmm, i did download a couple of those "fake" music files...all i heard was warped music and other trash...but it was a while ago (couple months at least)...

think i'm liable to getting caught? or would they not concern themselves with someone who only shared 3 mp3s over kazaa....?

oh yea, on topic...of course downloaded mp3s you didnt pay for have and always will be illegal...(unless permission was granted by the copyright holder), and it will only be a matter of time before all those programs such as limewire and kazaa and whatever that's out there get shut down SOME way or another (there may be legal back-up behind em [i.e: xerox could be used as an analogy to a file-sharing program], but...look what happened to napster). and now they released a law which...oh yea, miradi already said it:

so now that they plugged up filesharing programs which were proned to be released in the future, they just gotta take down what's present. (limewire, winmx, kazaa, etc.)

You really think that, since a regular ipod can hold over 25,000 songs, people would pay $25,000 to fill it up???? ($1 per song on itunes) That's nuts. Nobody that I know uses itunes and i don't blame them. it's a complete waste of money and if it wasn't for limewire, kazaa, imesh, etc., ipod would be a complete disaster.

iTunes has gotten really popular, and though not quite on par with free file-sharing softwares, it has certainly gone big, with many willing to pay money for mp3s to put into their iPods. Also, iTunes is NOT a waste of money. 99 cents a song is slightly expensive, yes, but not ridiculously high...besides, at least you're 100% safe and legal. and how do you know people paid a dollar for every song on their iPod? maybe they put some of the songs from albums they've already owned into their iPods. all assumptions...

if nobody you know uses itunes...then you really don't know that many people. Your last statement especially is a total assumption with no evidence to back up with.

And no, a regular iPod does NOT store 25,000 songs...a 20GB (standard) 4th gen iPod holds up to 10,000. 20000MB/25000songs = 800kb/song...i don't think so.
