The first woman in the Supreme Court announced today she is retiring.she's 75. There's only one other woman in the Supreme Court. Both are white...

Any comments?

I think that from the news that I heard earlier in the morning when they first heard that Sandra Day O' Connor was retiring, I wasn't really surprised, because she's getting older and she does need her rest sooner or later.

I figured Rehnquist would be the first to go. He's old, and has thyroid cancer, after all.

Open the floodgates for months-long Senate nominee hearings/filibusters!

i thought the same.

i think there's a big fear that the republican party will dominate all three branches of government. the dems are going to fight pretty hard to block bush's nominations.

I'm actually pretty pissed that she retired. She was the only liberal judge in the Supreme Court. If the Democrats can filibuster hard enough, hopefully we won't have another conservative judge.

right...

how many supreme court justices have there been?

like, 50 or so, probably.

now, what percent of black women are lawyers? how about latino women? asian women?

each are less than 2%.

so why the hell should there be a woman justice that's not white? there aren't any nonwhite women who should be considered, that's why.

She was pretty centrist, which is why she did a good job as a Supreme Court justice.

anyway. its a shame she's retiring, bet its better to leave 5 minutes too early than ten too late. like that guy who died. senator. slightly odd name. southern. kicking myself for not remembering him

that comment about them both being white was completely unnecessary

the entire supreme court should be centerist in my opinion. but, compared to other justices, she was more liberal. how skewwed is our supreme court that a centerist judge is considered liberal?

It's "life," meaning they can have the position until they die; but they're allowed to retire earlier.
