type something...

then right click on the text layer, choose blending options, and then check "gradient", then choose the gradient colors you want...

ok cool but is there anyway you can just pick two colors by entering the hexes? or is there another way? thanks

On the gradient toolbar, click the little box that actually shows the colors. You should be able to see a little slider with the colors. Click on the little arrow sliders and you should be able to choose your colors.

..... Set your foreground and background colors to the ones you'd like as your gradient..... The hit edit and save it as a gradient. If you select Noise as the gradient type, you can hit randomizer and it creates color patterns, I think.
Does that work in Photoshop...?

.... Make a selection around the text, make a new layer, fill the selection with a gradient (on the new layer), group with the text layer.

White doesn't gradient-ize if you set to color. Neither does black most of the time.
But... Stroke and erase the insides if you're using a diffrent color.
