Welcome to class today, folks!

Today we will start out with basics.

We're going to go over some words and symbols that are commonly mistaken for eachother and used in the wrong context.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
to, too, and two (2).
These three words, kids, are not the same and cannot be interchangeable.
I will give an example of each used in context.
I'm going to the store.
I want to come too!
Can we get two apples while we're there?
This is not the proper way to use the number 2 (two).
im goin 2 thu store!!!
As you saw above, using 2 there is incorrect.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

your, you're.
These two words are not the same and cannot be interchangeable.
I will give an example of each used in context.

Did you get your apples?
You're supposed to get them!

You're is a contraction (or combination) of the words "you" and "are".
Try saying the first sentence, but replace "your" with "you are".

Did you get you are apples?

That doesn't sound right, now does it? That's how you can tell when to use "your" or "you're".

There is also an apostrophe (') in "you're". Don't forget it! It's necessary to the word. It takes the place of the "a" in "are" to combine the two words.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let's go over some commonly mistaken punctuation symbols.
' - This is an apostrophe. It is used to combine words and in possessives.
` - This is not an apostrophe. It is commonly mistaken for one. As you can see, it creates much more space than an apostrophe does and looks quite awkward when one uses it in the place of an apostrophe.
! - This is an exclamation mark. It is used directly after the last word in a sentence to describe excitement.
1 - This is not an exclamation mark. It is commonly mistaken for one. This is the number 1 (one) and doesn't really look anything like an exclamation mark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Now we've gone over the basic commonly mistaken things. Next week's lesson will be on spelling.

Your test will be on Friday. The link to the test will be posted here at 2 PM Eastern time to the convenience of K1m, since I will be in Los Angeles at that time.

Thank you, and have a good week! If you have any questions, feel free to post them here and we will get back to you as soon as possible. _smile.gif

You're supposed to get them!

I found i mistake...

the way you used "you're" = "you were"
because you made it past ense "supposed"
so you wrote

"You were supposed to get them!"

if you had written "You're suppose to get them"
it would have been correct

The only way you really use the word "suppose" is when you say something like, "I suppose that is true."

Also, with that contraction.. it can be more than one tense, you know.

This is a smart idea, but it's not like anyone's going to read it. It's summer (or almost summer) for crying out loud.

Not like anyone's going to read it? We had pages of people who volunteered to participate.

..wanna go check the other thread?

this is needed. a lot of people on here have REALLY bad english and i'm sure they're tired of being humiliated by it. i don't really care if they post in here or take the tests and whatnot, but i would like for those who need it to read it.

this is all in fun. not everyone has to participate.
