Here's a short synopsis of each film (spoiler warning!):
STAR WARS IV: A NEW HOPE (1977): Yes, that's right, Episode IV was released first. The director, George Lucas, always intended Star Wars to be a series--nine movies, in fact, in his initial treatment of the films. (Some additional trivia about Lucas that might impress The Boyfriend: he went to USC School of Film, and his first film was "THX 1138". Other film credits include "American Graffiti," which your boyfriend's parents are most likely familiar with.) In Episode IV, Luke Skywalker meets Obi-Wan Kenobi and finds out that his father was a great Jedi Knight. The Jedi Knights are galactic protectors who are able to manipulate the mystical force known as, well, the Force. They fight with a weapon known as a lightsaber, which is basically a cross between a laser and a sword. The Jedi are all but extinct, as Darth Vader and his mentor, Emperor Palpatine, have destroyed all the other Jedi. Vader and Palpatine are "Dark Jedi," which are basically Jedi that manipulate the Force through selfishness, hate, fear, and anger, which leads them to commit evil acts. The good Jedi are known as "Light Jedi" and protect the galaxy. Obi-Wan and, as we find out, Yoda, are the only Light Jedi left. When his adopted parents are killed, he goes with Obi-Wan to Mos Eisley to catch a spacechip to the planet Alderaan, to deliver some droids (robots) named R2D2 and C3P0 to their master, Bail Organa. At this time, he meets the roguish smuggler Han Solo and his first mate, Chewbacca. Meanwhile, Princess Leia (the adopted daughter of Bail Organa), who has been captured by Darth Vader and brought on board the massive space station known as the Death Star, is forced to watch as the Death Star's superweapon, a huge laser, destroys her home planet of Alderaan. Luke and his companions set off for Alderaan, but upon reaching it, find it destroyed. Their ship, the Millennium Falcon (which can "make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs"--another good quote from the film), is captured by the Empire, but Luke, Obi-Wan, Han, and Chewbacca evade the Imperials, eventually rescuing Leia from confinement onboard the Death Star. As they try to flee, Obi-Wan Kenobi gets in a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader; we find out that Obi-Wan is the tutor of Vader. Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in order to allow his companions to flee (and so he can become a spirit that will give Luke guidance). They flee, but the Empire tracks them to the secret Rebel base on Yavin IV. The Death Star comes to destroy the base, but Luke Skywalker, with the help of the Rebels, flies a mission to the Death Star, and with the Force on his side, destroys it. Vader, however, escapes. STAR WARS V: THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1979): The Rebellion is in retreat, making the remote ice world, Hoth, their base. While scouting, Luke is captured by a wampa ice monster. Han retrieves Luke, only to find out that the Empire has discovered the base and is launching an attack. Luke once again flies a mission to protect the base while Han, Leia, and Chewbacca attempt to get the Millennium Falcon in a flyable condition again. While protecting the base, Luke is instructed by Obi-Wan to meet the great Jedi Master Yoda on the planet Dagobah. Upon fleeing Hoth, he heads for Dagobah, while Han and his friends try to escape with the rest of the Rebel fleet. Unfortunately, the Millennium Falcon is not completely fixed, and he is forced to ditch the ship on an asteroid to make repairs, with the Empire hot on his heels. Luke makes it to Dagobah, where he begins his training as a Jedi Knight with Yoda. Unfortunately, he is unable to realize the power of the Force until Yoda manages to get his X-wing starfighter out of the Dagobah swamp. Meanwhile, Han has gotten the Millennium Falcon up and running, and escapes to Bespin, where he hopes his friend, the gambler/con artist Lando Calrissian, can help him; unfortunately, the great bounty hunter Boba Fett traces him to Cloud City on Bespin, and brings the Imperial Fleet, lead by Darth Vader, along with him. Back on Dagobah, Luke suddenly has a premonition, through the Force, that his friends are in danger. Against Yoda's advice, he heads to Bespin to help. Yoda, and the spirit of Obi-Wan, are left remarking that Luke is vulnerable to the Dark Side of the Force, since his training is not complete. However, Yoda mentions that Luke is not the last hope for breeding new Light Jedi; as he notes, "there is another."Luke flies to Bespin, where he finds Leia, Chewbacca, Han, and C3P0 captured by the Imperials, who have taken over Cloud City. Han, in fact, has been frozen in carbonite (which puts him in a state of suspended animation) and is now in the clutches of Boba Fett, who plans on turning him over to a gangster named Jabba the Hutt, who has offered a hefty reward for Solo. Luke is unable to save his friends, instead being drawn into a lightsaber duel with Vader, who cuts off Luke's hand. Vader then reveals that he is Luke's father (in the now-famous lines, "No, I am your father. Search your feelings, Luke, you know it to be true. Join me. Together you and I can rule the galaxy as father and son." Another impressive piece of trivia is that the oft-quoted line, "Luke, I am your father," is not actually spoken in any of the films). Luke then escapes by plunging down a shaft. Meanwhile, Lando Calrissian, angered that the Empire has taken control of Cloud City, frees Leia, Chewbacca, and C3P0, and escapes with them on the Millennium Falcon. In the process, they rescue Luke, and rendezvous with the Rebel Fleet, where Luke gets a prosthetic hand. STAR WARS VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983): The third film in the original trilogy begins with a mission on Luke's home planet of Tatooine to free Han from Jabba the Hutt. Leia manages to free Han from hibernation, but the plan goes awry, and Chewbacca, Leia, and Luke are captured by Jabba. Leia is made the slave girl of Jabba, while the others are ordered to be executed, which involves them being thrown into the Sarlacc, a sand creature far out in the desert. Once again, with Lando's help, that plan is thwarted, and the "good guys" flee to the Rebel Fleet. Once they rendezvous with the fleet, it is revealed that the Empire is building another Death Star that must be destroyed. They are dispatched to the forest moon of Endor, to destroy a shield generator that is protecting the Death Star. On the moon, they are captured by a furry alien race known as Ewoks. The group is once again slated for execution, but when the Ewoks mistake C3P0 for a god, they are set free. Shortly afterwards, it is revealed that Leia and Luke are actually brother and sister. With the help of the Ewoks, they attack the shield generator and destroy it. The Rebel Fleet begins a battle to destroy the Death Star. Meanwhile, Luke turns himself over to the Imperials, in order to find out more about his relationship to Vader and hopefully turn him to the Light Side. He is brought aboard the Death Star, and eventually engages in a duel with Vader once again. This time, Luke cuts off Vader's hand, but then it suddenly strikes him that he is becoming just as bad as Vader, and he stops the duel. At this point, the Emperor decides to take matters into his own hands, and tries to kill Luke. But Vader, now turned back to the Light Side, throws the Emperor into the Death Star's main core, then dies in Luke's arms. Luke escapes with Vader's body just before Lando Calrissian, with the help of the Rebel fighter pilot Wedge Antilles, destroys the Death Star. END OF ORIGINAL TRILOGY Basically, films I-III are the story of how Anakin Skywalker, once a great Light Jedi, turned to the Dark Side and became Darth Vader. By Episode III, the Galactic is fighting an insurrection, led by Count Dooku and General Grievous. The first two movies aren't terribly important in telling this story (the third one is the one that matters), but here is a brief synopsis of the characters you will see in Episode III: ANAKIN SKYWALKER: Known later as Darth Vader, Anakin is the father of Luke and Leia. He is discovered at age 9 on the planet of Tatooine by the great Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn, his apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Padme Naberrie, the leader of the planet Naboo. After winning a pod race, he is taken to Coruscant, where Obi-Wan Kenobi is tasked with teaching him the ways of the Jedi. QUI-GON JINN: The Jedi Master who discovers Anakin, he is also the mentor of Obi-Wan Kenobi in Obi-Wan's younger days. Obi-Wan watches his master die at the hands of the Sith apprentice Darth Maul, who Obi-Wan then kills. OBI-WAN KENOBI: In Episode I-III, he is much younger, but already a powerful Jedi Knight. He eventually becomes the master of Anakin, teaching him the ways of the Jedi. He finds Anakin to be headstrong and sometimes a bit too angry. PADME NABERRIE: Also known as Queen Amidala, in Episode I, she is the (elected) queen of Naboo; by Episode II, she is Naboo's representative in the Galactic Senate, the ruling body before the Empire. She falls in love with Anakin, and at the end of Episode II, they get married. SENATOR PALPATINE: Originally a Senator from Naboo, he is elected Chancellor of the Republic at the beginning of Episode II. Jar-Jar Binks gives him emergency powers to quell a small insurrection, thus enabling him to become Emperor. (Note that is very much ties in to Roman history and the Office of the Dictator!) JAR-JAR BINKS: An annoying Gungan that helps Queen Amidala in Episode I. He becomes her proxy in Episode II, but thankfully, is pretty much gone by III. DARTH MAUL: The apprentice of Darth Sidious, tasked with killing Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. He succeeds in killing Qui-Gon, but is literally sliced in half by Obi-Wan. DARTH SIDIOUS: A Sith Jedi who's true identity is cloaked in secrecy, at least until Episode III... COUNT DOOKU: Once a great Jedi, he became disillusioned by the corruption of the Republic government, and became the apprentice of Darth Sidious after Darth Maul's death. He was tutored by Qui-Gon Jinn and Yoda himself. GENERAL GRIEVOUS: A droid that is the leader of the insurrection against the Galactic Republic. THE SITH: Not really a character, but a shadowy group of Dark Jedi. Once a dominating force, the Sith were beaten into submission by Light Jedi a long time ago. Now it is said that only two Sith exist at one time: a master and an apprentice... DROID ARMY: A huge army of droids, created by the Trade Federatio, who are the bad guys in Episode I. This army gets folded into the army of the insurrection in Episode II. CLONE ARMY: An army of clones supposedly created for the Republic to help fight the insurrection. *** That's some key information for you. It's a lot, so don't worry about knowing it all. It should explain a few things, but the movies are enjoyable and informative enough that you shouldn't have too much trouble following them. Have fun! The original trilogy is great, and while Episodes I and II kind of sucked, Episode III really makes up for them. |

lol just chill. I know your boyfriend and his family is all into star wars, but i mean i guess he knows that you never really have seen any of the movies, you can't expect to be a star wars expert over night lol. But you will like the 3rd one, just go and rent some of the star wars movies. Or better yet, go to your boyfriends house and watch them with him. He'll explain all the stuff to you. I mean, you can't really force yourself to like the movies lol, so give your honest opinion. I admire you doing all this for him, but be sure to have ur own opinion about the movies too ya know :) But i'm sure you'll love them, they really are the best movies. :) You should just watch them in the order they came out...old ones first. But like you said, if you have only a day until you see the third one? well, just go see the third one, i'm sure he'll explain the stuff you don't understand. And then keep watching the other ones later :) lol, don't stress urself out about it. Watching Star Wars is suppposed to be fun :O) lol

I just went to see the 3rd one today. It was confusing because it was like the first Star wars I ever saw. I don't like sci-fi movies. But it's pretty confusing if you've never seen it before. You should just be yourself, though. It's not like he's gonna dump you just because you don't like Star Wars.
