Now, I know that in the community guidelines for cB, there's the whole rule on advertising... but I think we need to redefine the definition of what is truely advertising, and what is actually a post of a helpful website.

Example 1: http://www.createblog.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=82914
Now, I know this may at first seem like an advertising post, but if you think about it, it could actually help people, like me. Now, I've always been quite pissed off at Paypal's fee's and limitations if you don't want to pay those fees. If this new paying system could actually be of some use to me, now I have to spend all the time googling when I could've just clicked the link that was removed.

Example 2:
http://www.createblog.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=82914
I don't see how my post about a compatability quiz is advertising, yet many of the posts in this topic are complaining about my topic being against the guidelines and is not allowed. I personally thought that the quiz was VERY helpful to my relationship and helped me realize some things (not many, but some) that I would have other wise would not have.

In both examples, what were percieved as advertisements, in my opinion, are actually helpful links/sites. I just want to bring this to everyone's attention. I'll add to the examples later when I have time to go through more posts.

And no, this does not go in Debate because the original intention of the post is not to debate, but to inform.

If you have a problem with your topics being closed then I suggest you take it up with the admins. But from the information you have provided it is advertising and not a helpful link. Also that is where your sig becomes useful.

What's wrong with my sig? Both of the links are sites I OWN. I see many other signatures with websites people own.

Advertising
Posting a thread for the sole purpose of advertising is not allowed. personal pages are only allowed in your signature, and commercial pages are only allowed for purposes of providing information.

My signature's webpage is not commercial, so I do not need to provide any information for it to be there. And since it's actually MY website, I can consider it my personal website.

If I were to take off my sig's links, you must take off yours

What's the point of only contacting the admins when the community is what I consider more important? The point of a community is so everyone has a say in what matters, and I believe this topic matters. Maybe this should be in the Feedback forum...

I don't want this to turn into some sort of oligarchy where all decisions are made by admins and mods and the community no longer matters.

Definition of Oligarchy

You misunderstood what I said. I was saying why make a topic about what you consider a "helpful link" when you can put it in your sig (thats where it becomes useful) and if people want to go there then they will. And I agree the community is important, but so is following the rules. Hence the reason your topic was closed because it didnt abide by the rules.

My topics were not closed. Wow, you didn't even read my topics. The only topic I created that was closed was the one on closing topics.

Oh, and while on the topic of breaking rules, your signature breaks the rules.
QUOTE
Signatures should not take up more than 300 pixels of vertical space (equivalent to 20 lines of text) and 573 pixels of horizontal space (to prevent from stretching). Signature images should be less than 100kB in filesize when combined. How you use the allotted space is entirely up to you.

Well, making a topic reaches a larger audience because I'm sure some people don't bother reading signatures and just want to read the actual posts.

can you distinguish between verticle and horizontal? her pic is 320(horizontal)x240(verticle)

the topic that you used as an example should be posted in the Big Book Of Resources. Since that is where all helpful links and resources are at. Its not necessary to change the rules for stuff like tha because its already been thought over.

this should probably go into the suggestions forum? i'm not sure though

Her pic is 240 vertical, then added her very large text, it will be more than 300.

Wow, I didn't know that existed... I guess that brings another point to my statement: Why do mods not point/add the links to that topic?

mmmm...don't blame the mods for you not knowing about it.
its pinned in the web design forum and we are all constantly referring people to it, and all you have to do is put a search in for "resources" and it will be at the top of the list.

And I would obviously KNOW that a topic like that existed when I've never posted anything in there nor have I never been in need of a resource to search for it?

I started agreeing with you at first,
but
you do admit that you have never been in there, no?

That is your own fault for not exploring enough. Fine, there was a mistake made once or twice because you haven't been there and because you are new to the site, but there is no excuse that you couldn't possibly ventured in the resources section [since march of last year], to see the resources.

well, your whole topic is about letting people post helpful links (aka resources)
The thing you should have done is made sure that createblog didn't already have an answer to what you proposed pinch.gif .
Why should we have to personally PM people the link to the big book of resources, or move it to the lounge where it doesnt belong just because you didn't know about it before jumping so quick to the conclusion that createblog, a resource site, didn't allow links to other resources for viewers because of the advertising rule ~_~

Any advertising site can be helpful to someone in some way or another.

It took me at most half a second to get to that website. Google Greenzap and it's the first link. How would you have to spend so much time googling it?

It's not our fault of you didn't know. Check the Site Map then.

But you are persuading people to do something. Maybe the mod should make an extra forum for advertisement related including convincing others to do something.

i'm confuse..
