Fellow cBers,

James (MarchHare2UrAlice), Ruth (Suddenly She), Basick, and I are going to start a sort of cB newspaper. At the moment, we have only simple plans, such as interviewing members and writing cB related articles, but we hope to expand the project with your help.

This is a way for you to become more involved with cB in a positive way, other members will surely appreciate your contribution, and you'll be getting extra writing practice. sweating.gif (I'm not very good at persuading people... maybe James, Ruth, or Basick can help me out here)... It'll be FUN~~~~~~

The "paper" will be posted in the Writing forum. As you all know, the Writing forum is often overlooked and this is one of the ways we hope to bring more attention to it. I know we have many talented writers in cB and I hope you all will consider joining our team!

This is only for fun and you will not be an official moderator or anything of the like. Please do not confuse this is a cB hiring thread.

If you're interested, please fill out this application and post it in this thread.

reasons to be on the team-
1. you'll learn what it's like to be part of the newspaper staff.
2. it promotes a better understanding of what's going on at cb, meaning less drama!
3. it'll be fun and cool. cool.gif
4. it'll be easier to see both sides of an argument.
5. yes, it does give you writing practice. it helps develop your voice, organization of ideas, development of ideas, etc.
6. to give back to the community.

there's plenty more. you just have to think of them.

Indicate experience – if any, please specify. Remember, your application does not depend upon experience.

Well, as for experience... I've submitted a few articles to our school newspaper. Not that that really has to do much with editing, but I've had some experience with newspapers. I've also done work with this Latin club newsletter that comes out every month. I'm going to be taking Journalism next year and I am interested in writing and editing. Hm... Also, I always like to do extra credit writings in English class and such. I just love to write and read and things like that.. I always have.

--

Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? -- This sounds really exciting. I've never seen anything like this on any other message board. A very unique idea and I would love to be involved! I'm a big fan of writing and editing, so I really would enjoy this. I'm on here quite a bit, so I could get a lot done. This just sounds really exciting and interesting.

What makes you deserve this position? -- Well, I have had some experience and I will be taking a Journalism class next year, which is a direct link to my school's newspaper, so I'll be experiencing even more in my ninth grade year. Also, I'm enthusiastic about it. I think this sounds really neat, and I'd love to be part of it.

What can you bring to the team? -- I'm a hard-working person. I like to try and get things done right the first time. So I can bring a hard-working and fairly accurate person to the team. Don't forget enthusiastic. :]

--

Editor Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really editor material? Accept or reject these topics:

Find the flaws and correct them. -- I do that a lot. Even in my everyday life, I try to fix problems/flaws, whether they deal with grammar, spelling, or just any other everyday problem. I don't like seeing things that are considered complete go by when they actually should have been edited.

Be supportive of the writer/author -- Of course!

Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism -- Yes, I prefer to give ideas rather than criticising. Maybe I'll deal out a little constructive criticism in-between the ideas, but I don't just flat-out criticise people.

Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience -- Yep! I like to try and see what I can do to make writing as appealing as possible, but still with the original meanings, ideas, messages, etc.

Oversee the layout of each "paper" -- Of course! I'm obsessed with organization. It must be organized and readable. So, I say yes.

Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work -- DEFINITELY! I always do that. Sometimes my friends ask me to re-read their essays and stories and such for class, and I always end up going back and helping them edit things to improve how readable and organized their paper is. I always try and get things as close to perfect as possible.

--

Thanks for taking the time to read my application!
This sounds so fun. _smile.gif

Journalism in school, writing for the local newspaper, honors english, yearbook staff (editor), head editor of school literary magazine, and now that I'm homeschooled I teach my sister (13 yrs old) English...

Letter of Intent
Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? What makes you deserve this position? What can you bring to the team? If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify.

I want to get more involved in cB's, I want to see the writing section grow to more than just freestyling (though that's cool too), and I've always gotten high marks in english and constantly am editing people's writing.

Editor Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really editor material? Accept or reject these topics:

Find the flaws and correct them.  - most definitely, I'm a grammer/spelling freak, it drives people crazy sometimes!
Be supportive of the writer/author  - yes, I hate putting people down because people have always done it to me... I'll never just criticize
Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism - ditto... I'm always thinking while reading of what could make this or that better, and I believe in constructive criticism, as you'll usually see in the pictures forum
Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience  - I'll try my hardest on this one
Oversee the layout of each "paper" - yes, layout is important, I'm becoming an organization freak
Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work  -oh yes, this is often my favorite part, I'm ready to work with authors to help them improve their style as well
(I'm sick, I love this stuff)

Ohh, this would be awesome! Count me in!!!

Newspaper staff this year at my school, and Yearbook staff last year, which will help with layout, and also article writing.

Letter of Intent
Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? What makes you deserve this position? What can you bring to the team? If you are considering more than one position, please write a separate letter for each one and specify.

This year I've had the chance to be on the newspaper staff at my school. This will be good practice for me because this fall I'm going to college, and I hope to study Communications. I hope that we can all work together to write articles that are interesting, informative, and as un-biased as possible.

Be supportive of the writer/author Of course =)
Contribute ideas instead of just throwing out criticism I wouldn't like any criticism without contribution, so I don't think the reporters would either
Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience Very important
Oversee the layout of each "paper" Yes, I've seen it done, I know a couple useful techniques
Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work Yep =)

Letter of Intent
I'd like to be a reporter on this staff because its always been an option for me in life to do some thing along these lines :P be it big-time news or cb news. And i really love the feeling of having my work read by the public...its very self-satisfying and inspirational for further writings. I think I have good writing skills and the right amount of spunk to keep my writings interesting and exciting.

“The CreateBlog Revolution”

The CB Revolution, forum renown (although in some cases looked down upon) as of late April quickly became a home to avid confrontation, debate, and compromise. This revolution was not just another cute topic, or joke, at the time; it has claimed to be a reform movement with a main goal of making CreateBlog a better place for its members. The capital topic of this “revolution” had been discussed after, and partially before, the new mod selection was announced to the public.
Accusable thoughts were definitely on some reader’s minds, such as to the real motives and reasoning behind the supporters of the Cb Revolution, and the thoughts of the CB Revolutionists directed towards those in higher powers.

The Demands of The CB Revolution Thread

- The addition of a suggestions forum
- Having each forum have is own mod that will read and check every topic in that forum
- The “reformation” of the Mod system; namely, a better system for denoting verbal warnings
- The informing of members about changes, if it affects the member directly.

In my own personal opinion, I feel as if this “revolution” has brought more of a voice to CreateBlog’s regular and official members, seeing as a suggestions forum has been placed on the Forums Index page that is open for us all, as a whole, to suggest and post in.

To experience the revolution first hand visit the main source of his article The CB Revolution

I'm sorry if it's a bit lenghty..

Createblog Newspaper Staff Application
Name: Kim
Age: 13 but 14 in 13 days (That's a week and six days!)
Mark Position Interested In:
3 Editor: Looks over submitted articles for accuracy, spelling, grammar, and appropriateness.

1 Runner: Finds photos and humorous writings. Will write captions when necessary. Must give credit.
Indicate experience
I was in the Italian newspaper but never actually got enough time to finish an article (yeah .. the problem was that there wasn't any recent Italian news so .. it was either quit or make - up one.)

Letter of Intent
Why are you interested in becoming a staff member? Ah, I have always wanted to be part of a newspaper (see I have been looking for Ezines hiring staff but well .. I can't find any e-zines I'd like to be a part of.)
What makes you deserve this position? I deserve the position of runner because for one thing, I'm a funny person. Well .. not intentionally but when I do try to say something funny no one laughs and when I do say something not funny, everyone laughs. It's ironic but .... Yeah it's just ironic.
What can you bring to the team? Pizzas! No... I don't know how to spell the word (that's one point off, isn't it?) Well .. I think it's pizzaz. But I don't know. I bring life! I have humor of all kinds: twisted, slapstick, family, teen, kid, etc! (I bet you didn't know there were all these types of humor things but there is!)

Runner Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really runner material? (Is this a rhetorical question?)

These are all my pictures actually:

Yes, Percy.

PERCY

We just finished Harding

TEACHER

Okay, well we can probably get through some of the next one, which is...

(she opens a book)

Okay, Calvin Coolidge. You know, my grandfather used to tell a funny story about Coolidge. This isn’t in your book, but...

The class moves as one to open their notebooks and prepares to write.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

You don’t need to write this down; it’s probably not even true. It’s just kind of funny, I think.

The class relaxes with the exception of Percy, who continues to open his notebook and uncap his pen diligently.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

Some of you may have heard before that they used to call Calvin Coolidge “Silent Cal,” because he...

She trails off, noticing that Percy has been writing down word-for-word what she says.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

Percy, you don’t have to write this down. It’s just a joke - it won’t be on the test.

PERCY

Okay.

He makes no move to cap his pen or close the notebook. The teacher stares at him for a moment before continuing.

TEACHER

Well anyway, they called him “Silent Cal,” because he was known for – Percy, you don’t have to write this down.

Percy looks up guiltily from his shorthand.

PERCY

Sorry.

Beat.

TEACHER

Why don’t you go ahead and put the cap back on that pen?

Percy caps his pen. Beat.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

Well, so he didn’t say much, is the point of the nickname. And the story goes that...

There is a telltale click from Percy’s pen cap coming off. He looks up with eyes wide. The teacher smacks the pen out of his hand without missing a beat.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

...there was a banquet at the White House, and this woman is sitting next to Coolidge and he hasn’t said anything throughout the entire dinner...

Percy has found a pencil and is still writing as the teacher talks. Again without losing a beat, she smacks the pencil from his hand and snatches the notebook, which she flings across the room.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

...and so finally she looks over at him and says, “Mr. President, I was talking with my husband earlier when I found out I was going to sit next to you and” – PERCY!

Percy has found another pencil and is writing on a small notepad.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

You really don’t have to write this down!

She grabs the notepad and rips out the page he has written on, then crumples it up and bounces it off of his face.

TEACHER (CONT’D)

(composing herself)

Anyway. She says, “My husband bet me $20 that I could get you to say more than two words.” And so Coolidge...

She trails off as a strange tapping sound begins to compete with her speaking. She looks over to see Percy writing with a third pencil on the surface of the desk. She SCREAMS and tackles him out of his desk. Percy struggles to crawl away from her, but she grabs him around the knees and drags him down again. The bell rings.

Example of humorous bit:
Mortified doesn’t describe how Jane’s parents felt after meeting her boyfriend. He sported vile tattoos, swore, and just had a hostile air about him.
After he left, the mother said, “Dear, he doesn’t seem like a very nice person.”
“Mom,” Jane said, “if he wasn’t very nice, why would he be doing 500 hours of community service?” American Legion Magazine

^ Hahaha. Jane takes that the 500 hours of community service as like he's a nice guy - and he volunteers his time at that but really, he's doing 500 hours of community service because probably of a crime or something.

Allow me to answer since I was the one to begin the thread. Firstly, the initial post should have given you a very clear answer.

QUOTE(uninspiredfae @ May 20 2005, 10:28 PM)
This is only for fun and you will not be an official moderator or anything of the like. Please do not confuse this is a cB hiring thread.
*

It's nothing official, but it's for fun.

Secondly, the ONLY thing this thread is meant to advertise is the writing forum, which goes unnoticed by the majority of cB. Our writings will be posted in the Writing forum.

It is only authorized by the effort of those who would like to see members involve themselves in a positive, non-spamming manner.

I do not understand how this would be advertising. Perhaps, you can explain it to me now that I've explained myself to you.

Reporter Applicant’s “Audition”

n00bs-A Blessing or a Curse?

Lately, in the cB community, there have been many newcomers, or n00bs, as they are often reffered to as. Many veteran members have had complaints against these "n00bs," as they are often referred to, many times accussing them of double posting and spamming.

Says one user, "As you accumulate more posts, you gain more respect from [the]members. If you're a newbie that double posts, no one knows... you could've signed up strictly for spamming."

There are those, however, who are not necessarily taking sides on this issue. Another user proclaims, "... I can spam this board to death but doubt everyone will respect me ;)."

As for the n00bs, well, I guess they're just going to have to learn about the edit button, increase their post counts and tread carefully in the name of grammar.

Letter of Intent
Well, I'm jumping the gun here, but if appointed an editor, that would be the appropriate position for me, seeing how I was chief editor of the 2003/2004, and 2004/2005 yearbooks, co-editor of the 2003/2004 school periodical, and chief editor of the 2004/2005 edition, as well as the editorial cartoonist. That should be a testament to my anal nature concerning journalistic perfection. Editor-wise, I bring experience, and quite frankly, anal retentiveness.

Reporter-wise, I'd say I'm well fit for the job. Without tooting my horn too excessively, I'm a good writer. That's just about all there is to it. In a nutshell, as a reporter I would simply bring raw writing skill.

Editor Applicant’s “Audition” Are you really editor material? Accept or reject these topics:

[A]Help the author develop content that will appeal to the audience

[A]Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work

To reject any of these responsibilities would be to forfeit my former high school position. Therefore, why would the same not apply to cB's periodical?

Reporter Applicant’s “Audition”

(I'd really much prefer just to write, though I can contribute editorial experience).

Parole System Outlives Its Utility

In 1966, three teenagers were taken from their car, beaten brutally, and murdered. The perpetrator's name was Kenneth Allen McDuff, now dubbed Texas' most notorious criminal. For weeks, McDuff evaded police, until finally in late '66, he was brought to justice. Sentenced to life in prison without the chance for parole, McDuff was doomed to a life consisting of aphorisms; 'rotting in jail', 'doing time', and 'jail baiting' it. However, due to a sentencing law change, McDuff became eligible for parole, and, in 1991, was released. The very same month, McDuff went on a killing spree that claimed the lives of six innocent women in two weeks' time. Executed in the late 90's, McDuff serves as a lasting example of the ill effects of the United States' generous 'second chance'.

Happy choosing. Working on a staff with Fae is reason enough to apply.

Well I am the official grammar nazi no matter WHAT Nicki says =]. I do believe most of my posts are correcting other people and their gross grammar.

Letter of Intent

Well in the future, I hope to be an editor of a real newspaper/magazine and I think this would be good practice. Also even tho I have left cB, I still care about it and wouldn't mind being involved. I also thrive on correcting peoples grammar and informing them of their mistakes. I think I would be a great editor because I am not afraid of telling people what they have to hear. I won't try to sugar coat it and I will try to make this paper great. Also, I am the grammar nazi, how much more do you need to know?

Oversee the layout of each "paper": Yeah, that is always fun. It taps into my lovely creative side.
Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work: Yup, obviously. I mean isn't that what editors are supposed to do anyways?

hey! just to keep you guys updated, fae and I are working through the applications, and we'll let you guys know whats going on soon

therefore, if you want to apply and have not done so, please do so ASAP. just as a reminder, PLEASE FILL OUT THE APPLICATIONS IN THE CORRECT FORMAT, IE BY LISTING THE POSITIONS IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE.

NOT EVERYONE CAN HAVE THE POSITION THEY WANTED AS THEIR FIRST CHOICE, SO WE NEED TO HAVE A FALL BACK OPTION. PRIORITY IS BEING GIVEN TO THOSE PEOPLE WHO FILLED OUT APPS CORRECTLY.

by not giving us other options, you are limiting your own chances of getting your ideal post.
