Well, when you think about it it also depends who you grow up with. For instance, if you were a girl with a bunch of brothers, you might play football, baseball, or soccer with them all the time. And if your the youngest boy with a bunch of sisters they might influence your fashion sense...I think...maybe?...also, if your parents are all like teaching you chess as a kid, and not like having you do many sports, your not really going to do many sports and then they don't matter much in your life, so you might not like PE. Who you grow up with really influences you as a person, no matter whether you're a guy or girl.

Well, gender roles have a lot to do with it. As well as hormones which define and make distinct the characteristics of a man and a woman. However, it also has to do with your perception of the world around you. I mean, boys may like girly things, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they're gay. And again with the girly things, that society lets this happen where some things/idea/etc. are considered to be feminine or masculine. Did I go off-topic?

I heard that it involves something about their hormones or something... It has an affect on how they think and some things they're good at. But I wouldn't swear to that information. So yeah.

Biologically, we ARE different. We are wired differently. However, gender roles in our society are NOT biological. They are purely human-made. If a girl plays with Barbies and a boy plays with trucks, this is not because of the way they are wired, it is because of the influences in our society of how boys and girls are "supposed" to act.

Men and women may be different, but that does not make women inferior to men or vice versa.

Any genetic psychologist would tell you it has to do with genes, but genetic psychology produced such idiots as the Nativists.

I tend to think it's more of a social thing. Social/behavioral psychologists have offered far more proof that it has to do with social influence.

Yeah. The hormones and genes are DIFFERENT, but not neccessarily to say that girls like Barbies and boys like violence. I think that people are influenced to do these things. If they grow up, the first thing that's put in their head is that girls are to like pink and bows and boys to toy trucks and violence.
It's like how Jewish children grew up in Palestine to hate Arabs and Arabs to hate Jews. But then people wonder, "Why do we hate them anyway?" And yet this pointless hatred lasted so long and still lasts now. That's what's happening now because we're wondering why girls are the way they are and why guys are the way they're like they are. I truthfully have no idea, but animals don't have this kind of system. Genders usually don't matter. But the men are generally the ones that fight (like for mates) and that makes them tougher. Toughness = violence and other "hardcore" stuff. Men were made the superior gender, so we expect them to be tougher and take more responsibility. Somehow pink just represents being lighthearted and not caring about anything and it's generally not an angry or violent or tough color which is what men represent. I'm just saying in general. Like male lions are superior and stuff like that. Phew, I'm done.

It's because of the surronding and influence .. even girls wear guy's clothes and guys wear girl's clothes .. its everything around them. i dont think they did something to the recent babies at all ..

ok, so let me enlighten you on this expirement:

they took male chimps and female chimps, who had never seen children playing.

they let them either play with a truck or a doll.

male chimps take the toy truck, female ones take the toy doll.

like i said, it stems from the hunter-gatherer age of humans.

the females took care of the children, searched the brush to gather the best food they could find, did more high-temp cooking (like cooking bone marrow). They stayed around caves more.

the males got meat. they searched around for an adequete animal to kill, and killed that. they made many temporary camps, with small fires where they cooked the red meat, and stuff that could be easiley cooked. other things were brought back to the females because they couldn't cook them at temporary fires.

now: how does this affect life now? well, males tend to look for a good-enough outfit when shopping, whereas females look for the best and take much longer. males prefer red meat much more. females are more inclined to take care of children and to pretend to take care of children. males tend to move around a lot, and females don't leave behind thier home that easily.

the male body is built for speed while running and efficency. the female body is built to carry a child. it is all genetic.

in fact, the reason why males will take female gender roles and females take male gender roles is completely social and against evolutionary tendenceys. it's unnatural.

Hmm, I guess I was an exception to the rule. As a child, I was an avid BMX-er and outdoors person. I had dolls, but I didn't really play with them. I got a computer when I was 10 and from there I became a "nerd". I always read a lot, watched a lot of violent and gory movies and tv shows, as well as anime. I began listening to rock and metal at a young age.....typically, American society thinks of those things as "boy" activities.

When we moved to the suburbs, I got into horror movies, science fiction, psychology, computers, electronics, music. I got way into the works of Jhonen Vasquez, and slasher flicks. I got into industrial music and starting dressing in all black. I got into the pits at concerts, hung out with mostly guys, and was a loner type person throughout most of high school. More "guy" things, I suppose.

Today, I'm about half-and-half. I take care of pretty much all of my and my boyfriend's personal matters, like finances and cooking and such. If there's anything that needs to be fixed, like the computer or one of the 1000 electronic gadgets that we own, I'm the one that breaks out the instruction manual and fixes it. I love violent video games but I also enjoy RPGs and Sims-like games. I love anime, the Discovery Channel and slasher flicks but I also enjoy talk shows and some chick filcks. I've stopped getting in the pit at shows (I fractured my skull a year ago in a pit) but I still love going to shows and rocking out to my favorite songs. I love my music and am more of nerd about my music than anything else...

In the end, I believe that society plays a part and so does nature. Obviously, nature is what causes us to be one gender or the other. Society tells us that girls are supposed to be pretty, soft-spoken, neat, and organized. They're supposed to be good with words, bad at math, and dislike getting dirty and sports. Girls aren't supposed to get into fist fights or mosh pits. Blah Blah Blah....Boys are supposed to like those kinds of things and are encouraged to do things like fight, perform well in school, like sports, hate reading.......Blah Blah Blah....Some people are just a mixture of traits and a bit of both as far as personality goes.
