OK I have a paper to write for my class Southern Woman:Myth and Reality. I'm going to be writing on the sterotypes and beliefs, etc of southern belles. I have to get opinions from other people that I will use in my paper. I thought CB would be a great place to start. So what comes to mind when you think of a southern belle. Also do you see southern belles are just be based on one race, white woman or do you consider other races as southern belles if they are from the south. Thank you in advance.

I wrote a paper for my friend that was similar to this entitled; "Northern Jerk, Southern Gentlemen" in which I did a compare and contrast on how men are viewed and how charming they are based on what part of the country they're from.
When I think of a Southern Belle, I think of the picture perfect image of a caucasian woman, born with a silver spoon in her mouth, that could be the spokesperson for proper decorum. Then, I also think of ignorance and the sheltered life she could live not being exposed to those of other races that are her equals or superiors. Finally, I think of the Kentucky Derby. And I'm sure that speaks for itself. |

my thinking is because of this book that took place during the civil war that we had to write a giant paper on. so.
a white woman with a brightly colored hoop dress, sewing or knitting or something-ing flags for the army in a sewing circle of other rich women while gossiping and drinking tea. blame the last silk dress. by ann rinaldi. but that's what she wrote, pretty much, and so then that's what i remember. some rich girl decides to make a hot air balloon out of the brightly colored silk dresses from the women of the south, that's pretty much it. but they did make hot air balloons, i think on both sides, to spy. |

I always think of a caucasian woman in a parlor with a parasol and a big hoop skirt because we did a musical in Honors Choir that had a scene like that. It was entitled "Gone With The Breeze."

Surprisingly, I think of Rouge from X-Men. But that doesn't help so ... I think of blonde women with their hair in a bun and with a parasol wearing those old style bartender clothes.

I think of a woman with a big red hat tipped to the side, a big lacy red dress, a big red parasol, and curly hair.
Yes...the theme of this woman is big and red things...yes, I'm an idiot. |

Scarlett O'Hara actually...how odd. Blue lace hoop skirt dress, brown hair in a neat bun, white lace gloves and a matching fan sitting in the rocking chair of a wide porch on a plantation styled home, fanning herself while watching the children play in the yard. Or this woman sitting on the porch with a woman friend (dressed similarly) gossiping over iced tea.
