I'm going to say break, but it sounds really fishy, but then again I don't know him, so like every one said ASK HIM!

It sounds to me like he is trying a really nice subtle way to say, "We're done." Therefore meaning he is your ex. But the only way you will ever know is if you ask him. So, ASK HIM! It might sound stupid to say, "Are you my ex?" Haha so instead just say, "So, are we still together or what? I'm confused on if you still want to be with me." It's a bit more subtle.

Couldn't have said it better.
