http://kidshealth.org/parent/infections/ba...oxic_shock.html
Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) Toxic shock syndrome from Staphylococcus starts suddenly with vomiting, high fever (temperature at least 102 degrees Fahrenheit, or 38.8 degrees Celsius), a rapid drop in blood pressure (with lightheadedness or fainting), watery diarrhea, headache, sore throat, and muscle aches. Within 24 hours, a sunburn-like rash appears. There also may be bloodshot eyes and an unusual redness under the eyelids or inside the mouth (and vagina in females). On days 3 and 4 of the illness, broken blood vessels may appear on the skin. Other symptoms may include: confusion or other mental changes; decreased urination; fatigue and weakness; thirst; weak and rapid pulse; pale, cool, moist skin; and rapid breathing, leading to shock. Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) Streptococcal toxic shock syndrome can happen following a Streptococcus infection in the body, most often a skin infection or an infected wound. Within 48 hours of infection, the person's blood pressure drops dangerously low, and she may have fever, dizziness, confusion, difficulty breathing, and a weak and rapid pulse. The skin may be pale, cool, and moist, and there may be a blotchy rash that sometimes peels. The area around an infected wound becomes swollen, red, and sometimes necrotic (has areas of severely damaged, "dying" flesh). The liver and kidneys may begin to fail, and bleeding problems may develop. |

theres this stuff you put out when your on your period (forget what its called) but its bad, and if you leave your tampon in too long it bulids up.and you can get really sick, even die. but by taking it out you let that stuff out too so your ok.it said not to leave in over 6-8hours. also it says this stuff on the tampon box lol.

yeah i heard if you leave a tampon in over 8 hours you'll get it, so i just watch the clock so i'll know when 8 hours is up. yet, i've left it in for a few minutes over 8 hours and it did nothing, so i don't think it's exactly 8 hours...

From the tampax leaflet itself.
QUOTE TSS Information
Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare but serious illness. It is caused by toxins produced by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus which is commonly found in the nose and vagina. TSS can occur in men, women and children. Approximately one-half of the cases occure in menstruating women and girls. Menstrual TSS is associated to tampon use. It is more likely to occur in teenage girls and women under 30 than in older women. Early recognition and treatment of the symptoms are important. Symptoms TSS can occure anytime during menstruation or shortly thereafter. It can rapidly progress from flu-like symptoms to a serious illness that can be fatal. The warning signs of TSS are listed below, but all of them may not be present. - High fever - Vomiting - Diarrhoea - Rash that looks like sunburn - Dizziness - Muscle aches - Fainting or near fainting when standing up. Skin peeling may occur in later stages of the illness. If you have one or more of these symtoms, you must immediately: - Remove tampon - Seek medical attention - Tell your doctor if you have been using a tampon and are concerned about TSS If you had TSS once, you can get it again. You should talk to your doctor before using tampons if you have had symtoms of TSS in the past. Ways to reduce the risk of TSS You can reduce the risk of menstrual TSS by using a pad instead of a tampon at least once a day during your menstrual period and by using the tampon with the minimum absorbency required to meet your needs. You can also essentially eliminate the risk of menstrual TSS by not using tampons. |

You get it froo leaving your tampons in more more hten 8 hours. The cotton up there builds up bacteria, which gives you TSS in simples words. To avoid it:
DONT WEAR TAMPONS TO SLEEP! =] |

i'm not exactly sure about how to get TSS, but from the information that i've read about, i think that you get it when you have a tampon in for more that eight hours, or something like that. i don't use tampons, so i'm not sure that its on the box, but i read an article about it in my health book, and in seventeen magazine. i remember that one of the symptoms are severe fever, and throwing up or something like that.

Just don't leave your tampon in for more than 6 hours and you won't have to worry about it.

don't leave it in too long! eight or six....I believe it's eight, but depends on the type of tampon, just to be on the safe side though, i'd go with six, even if the box says eight. TSS is pretty rare, but also pretty dangerous.
