I was assigned an essay on the topic, "What is the purpose of stories which aren't even true". Our teacher showed us Big Fish and we read "Haroun and the sea of Stories" to incorporate quotes from them. I just needed ideas, I have a couple but they aren't strong enough for me to back up with explanations and quotes. A thoughts will help. Thanks.

well, fiction stories could represent something in real life or promote a certain belief/moral.

Fiction Stories can allow one to be more imaginative.... Non- Fiction stories tell the person exactly how something went... WEll how can a person use his or her imagination when that story already happend??? Fantasy, Sci Fi etc. can have one meaning to one person, and a different meaning to another.... Its kind of like art. The artist may have had a vision, motivation, or emotion to draw his or her masterpiece. But as each person views the art work, they can interprete and think differently from the person.

A story doesn't have to be true to be a great one. There are plenty of great fiction stories..take Lord of the Rings..One of the most respected books because of how much creativity and imagination it captured. Fiction lets you go past the everyday things of life, and releases our imaginations. And as for "Big Fish" i would say that i was glad that he told his story in fiction form so the reader could really grasp his sense of adventure and how the true story felt to him, felt like fantasy to us. I dunno, lol it's an interesting homework assignment hehe

Well...myths were created..to explain the origin of the world..

Folktales were created..to entertain everyone..teach everyone a moral through a story.

harriet beecher stowe's book, uncle tom's cabin was fiction. most anti-slavery books/articles back then were boring and fact and fact and fact, but hers brought emotion from other people because people would sympathize with the characters. which affected america, because it made slavery more realistic. the end.

i hope that helped.

Stories that aren't true most times teaches you a lesson, like a moral or something that you learn in real life. That is mostly the purpose of it, although sometimes is just for entertaining.
