sure, there are threads in the technology forum about ipods; but none specifically for debating.

so here's the setup:

the apple ipod is the most popular portable music player in the United States. the word ipod has become synonomous with a hard drive device, like xerox because synonymous with copy machine.

However; the ipod was not the first MP3 player. They were not the first Hard drive player. The only thing that the ipod had that others didn't was the scroll wheel.

basically; the ipod was, and still is, priced higher than other similar competitors.

yet is the reason why it dominates is that it is actually a good portable music player, or is it becuase of clever advertising, it's status as a status symbol, and the mass stupidity of many?

i think it's because of it's clever advertising, status symbol, and the mass stupidity of many. there are other mp3 players that own the ipod, such as the iriver. i actually think the ipod is cliche now, and makes you look less trendy.

...of course, i'm pretty much a hypocrite, seeing as i have one. i got mine the year it came out, so i'm stuck with a two year old generation one ipod that has extremely crappy battery life. all my friends told me i was wasting my money when i got it then, but of course had it on their christmas lists this last year. losers.

apple is known for their trendy designs. many people find it prettier for some reason. also, apple has more leverage considering they own iTunes.

and why would you trust ipod more than iriver? this is a debate; please try to use facts.

the iriver h340 costs $400 (list).

the ipod photo 40 gb cost 459.99 (list). add 50 bucks for recording (although still no line in) and 50 bucks for FM tuner, and you have something costing 550 dollars. buy a 30 buck case, and your $ 30charger (which isn't included anymore) and you have something costing a nice 610 bucks.

did i mention the river can play videos?

the iriver also comes with a one year warrenty, and they replace it if something happens.

so why do you trust ipod more than iriver? brand name? iriver tells you that thier battery will run down in about 5 years if you constantly charge and discharge it. Does ipod tell you that ater 3 or so years of mederate use, the battery must be replaced BY THEM? for lots of money? the iriver one can be replaced by anyone. for the cost of the battery.

so why do you trust ipod?

Hmm...iPod is a bit overpriced but they do it because they know we will buy it and they can. Yes, those iPod commercials helped them out along with celebs endorsing their products.

However, in my opinion Apple has always been extremely high look at Macs compared to PCs, but their design is so nice and the quality is good. If I could afford it I would get it. If I was on my last dollar, I go to something less fancy.

A load of crap is overpriced these days, iPod is not an exception. Stop making it out to be so bad.

i think it is so successful because of advertising, the look of it, the amount of memory, and because of the brand: apple. =/
i don't have one, though.

why should it be? the HDD i have cost half as much as the ipod equivalent and is better quality wise.

it uses a more durable chipset and a more durable hard drive, and a better battery.

Then do something about it! We live in a capitalist society, if you know it's overpriced, and there are other options, take them!

it's overpriced...
and don't you have to pay to download music also?
well i think it would be much more convenient if you download music for free to your computer and burn cd and just bring a cd player with you.

I forgot about only buying fom that Apple iTunes store. Anyhoo, I wouldn't buy an iPod unless I was rich or could afford it or something. I def. go with one I can add my own music, whether I bought it or not.

Ok...I think whoever marketed the ipods is a genious. They really knew what they were doing. I have an ipod, but i think it was wayy overpriced for what it's worth. It's good for downloading all your cds onto it, but i mean if you wanna get stuff from the internet, then forget about it. It takes forever to get all your cds and stuff onto the ipod. The most i get out of it is if i'm traveling, and i just put it in my purse or somethan and i don't have to worry about carrying some big book of cds and all. But yes i think it was way overpriced. Also, i think there are much better Mp3 players that cost less. But i mean the ipods were just marketed better. But don't get me wrong, they are pretty cool lol whistling.gif
