i agree with the first part of what you said. but what ppl need to know is that black history month is not about slavery. like the other posters said in the history bools all you see is white ppl. and you have the nerve to complain about not havin a white history month. isnt whats in the books enough. cant black ppl just have their 1 little short month. GOSH FRIGGEN IDIOTS (j/p!)
*

If you all have such a big problem with history textbooks, why don't you write a letter to the publisher and ask why there's so many white people in the textbook?

It's a silly notion to believe that people who write these books purposely write more about white people, just for the sake that they're white.

NO. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

WE DO NOT LEARN ABOUT WHITE CONTRIBUTIONS.
WE DO NOT GIVE RECOGNITION TO WHITE PEOPLE FOR SIMPLY BEING WHITE.
WE DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING ABOUT WHITE HISTORY.
WE DO NOT LEARN ABOUT WHITE HISTORY, AT ANY TIME.

we learn about AMERICAN history. you recognize these people because THEY WERE A PART OF AMERICAN HISTORY, not because they're white. ALL SCHOOLS RECOGNIZE ALL PEOPLE THAT CONTRIBUTED TO AMERICAN HISTORY, INCLUDING NON-WHITES. in most high schools, you start learning world history. i know you do, I'M IN THE CLASS RIGHT NOW. you don't learn just about american history. YOU DON'T. you learn about a lot more people than white people. not because they're a certain race, but because they contributed to world history.

OK. THAT IS THE LAST TIME THAT IS EVER BEING EXPLAINED. EVER. IF ONE MORE PERSON SAYS THAT ALL YEAR IS FOR WHITE HISTORY OR SOMETHING, THEY'LL GET A PM WARNING AT LEAST SINCE THE DEBATE FORUM RULES STATE THAT YOU MUST READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE THREAD BEFORE POSTING AND NOT BRING BACK THINGS THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN COVERED.

i agree with treesturnmeon...i think that racism is on both sides of the equation here. I think all this civil rights nonsense is not really happening. blacks were segregated, and now its whites. WILL WE EVER TRULY NOT BE RACIST! we must throw down our barriers and realize that skin color MEANS NOTHING! i think that in order to completely rid racism i think nething regarding skin color should be thrown out. its stupid. it doesnt matter and never should matter!

I've thought about this too. Practically every February. There are so many races that go unrecognized (I'm not saying Caucasian on this one, though). I also think that a main reason is that there are so many different cultures embedded inside "Caucasian". They come from so many different countries. Granted, so do African-Americans, but I guess whoever made "Black History Month" decided that it was okay to generalize it. I don't really understand the real reason, but that's my theory.

why cant we look at things without making it about racism, or some kind of competition to come out on top? just take it like it is. jesus. black history month is about remembering/acknowledging the history, hardships, and progress of african-americans. nothing more. nothing less. its not about being recognized more than other ethnicities or cultures.

and are you people aware that theres an asian pacific american history month too? (may)

true but it took a black man who had a dream for his people to make a huge impact on the whites views about the blacks. he actually brought changes to the world back then and helped carve freedom for blacks today.

well, it's pretty easy to maintain "white culture" in america. the whole black history month thing is a way to promote pride in african american culture and accomplishments.

if anything we should have american history. period. cuz really, all year we learn about white history. and no im not racist. I'm 4 different races. bUt I think that since we spend a whole of 28 days out of the year on black history, and the rest on mainly (I said mainly, not all, so dont warn me) white history, I think its not enough. It shouldnt even be segregated. And I mean, if it hadnt been for black history month I wouldnt hardly know anything about that part of my culture. I think the curriculum should be more balenced towards all of this countrys diverse history. that was we dont need a black history month. BUT in contrary, I do think the african american people as a whole are getting too many freebies. Its setting black american youth and example that says "you dont have to try and be the best, because colleges will take you even if you are in the bottom 50th percentile in your class" and "you don't have to try because everyone is going to lay a carpet doen for you to make it easier" when all black american children are just as capable of learning and succeeding and white american, asian , hispanic whatever. So I do think that there shold be more pressure on the knowledge and progress of african american youth instead of on the fact that they were born with dark skin.

as long as anything like this exists there will never be true equality.

how can you say you aren't racist and then go celebrate people for a month because of the color of thier skin?

"i have a dream that one day... "
did Mr. King dream that this would happen?

is this his dream?

that the color of your skin DOES matter? except it's a politically correct mattering?

^ there will never be true equality.. the thought of ultimate equality scares the crap out of me.

in addition, "racism" is defined as the following:
a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

now, i hope you're not accusing african americans of this when all they're trying to do is instill some pride in their heritage.

oh, sorry.. the focus is a little off.
well, it wouldn't be racist; i just don't think that people would be as loyal to it, since we already celebrate washington and lincoln's birthday.. and columbus day. we are exposed to the accomplishments of caucasians all the time.

......again, it's because they're americans, not because they're white. NO ONE has EVER been recognized and praised and whatnot solely because they're white. that's the whole point and if anyone has to say this again i'm going to scream.

and, again, we no longer celebrate their birthdays alone. it's now great americans day, martin luther king day and presidents combined. my school told us that and it changed in our agendas; that's why we didn't get martin luther king day off.

hey, i said that i wouldn't mind it.. i quote myself:

QUOTE

i didn't say i was against it; i just said that i didn't think many people would be quite as loyal to it as black history month.

i dont like that definition. when i was in highschool, i was pres. of the cultural awareness club, and i had to go through about 4 books... most of them defined racism as the irrational hate or fear of an entire ethnicity. racist people dont always believe that race is determinant of human/physical traits and capacities... some people are racist because something that happened in history involving a certain race, or even personal experiences with people of that race..

believing one race is superior to another is ethnocentrism

I'm not racist. Black history month isnt some month where we celebrate why black people are better...it just goes into the HISTORY as in the achievents and it recognizes those who may have been overlooked otherwise. And if you read on you would plainly see I wasn't racist because if I was I would think black people deserved the world to be handed to them without working for it just cuz theyre ancestor *might* have been a slave.
