i think having more than one [inset race here] month would defeat the purpose. of course, i dont necessarily think that theres a point to black history month either, but shhh dont tell, because that might make me racist rolleyes.gif

I'm too lazy to read through the 10 pages, but in response to the first topic started, I don't think their should be a white history month. I was watching "Slavery in America" (Extra Credit Assignment) and there was this one part that I still can't get out of my head. It's been a week already and I can still remember the words so clearly.

1. If a slave runs away the first time, they get whipped. (They even had the sound effects that made me cringe.)
2. If they ran away the second time, they get the letter "R" branded on their right cheek.
3. If they ran away the third time, they get their left ear chopped off and another "R" branded on their left cheek.
4. If they ran away the fourth time and if they are a man. They get castrated.

Now yes, the past is the past, but honestly...I don't think their should be a white history month.

when i think of black history month, i don't immediately think of slavery, i think of the amount of years and struggling the blacks had to work on to get to where they are today. Not that long ago were blacks and white seperated. Not that long ago was the whole incident of Rosa Parks. Not that long ago was Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X having speeches. It wasn't that long ago, and that is why I feel that Black History Month is important.

QUOTE
Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week" and later as "Black History Month." What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied—or even documented—when the tradition originated. Although blacks have been in America at least as far back as colonial times, it was not until the 20th century that they gained a respectable presence in the history books.

This website really explains more about the history of Black History Month .. how it started, WHY it started and all that good jazz.

I don't think it was an actual statement of lets all discuss on how we should have black history month, but more like ... why does the blacks have a month and yadda yadda. I read in sections of this thread how people didn't really see the point behind black history month and that is why I posted that.

Everyday is 'white history month' in America (even though I just contridicted myself). Look, our founding fathers fathers ran the slave trade, taking people away from their families and so on for over 100 years. Can anyone honestly say that African Americans don't deserve one month dedicated to their culture and heritage, after all that they have put up with over the years?

not with out help from teh dominant tribes in africa they didnt. although that doesnt particularly make it any less terrible, or the early americans any less guilty, it should be noted that the trade in west african flesh did not begin with the white man. the slave trade was already established long before the first boatload left the continet, bound for portugal

What the Hell? Founding Fathers ran the slave trade? mellow.gif

How do you define a "Founding Father"? They are supposed to be the ones who signed the Declaration of Independent and the US Constitution... They may have owned slaves, but they didn't run the slave trade nor did they encouraged it.

I think that Independence Day pretty much covers White History month. When America became an independent nation, that was an achievement made by whites. When blacks gained their freedom from slavery and race discrimination, that was their own achievement. I have to agree with you though, that blacks are getting too much recognition because nowaday blacks aren't slaves, they can vote, and they can do anything any other person can. Black history month is fine, but I don't think that they should be favored over other races. Rascism is one of my major pet-peeves. We just had a racist substitute who was making fun of asians (I'm asian!) and it really ticked us off, but that's another story. _dry.gif

they just changed it like, recently. so yea. if you didn't buy the calander like, last month, it would be like that. they JUST changed it. that's why my school didn't get off on martin luther king day. please don't act as if i'm ignorant, i wouldn't say they changed it if they didn't..

and will you PLEASE all read through before you post. if you're too lazy, then don't post, cause these points have already been brought up. yes, we KNOW black people went through a lot of rough times, but other people did too and we shouldn't focus on only black peoples' struggles.

THAT'S THE POINT.

How about you think of reading the whole thread and see how everyone has answered to this kind of comment before repeating the same sentiment that has been expressed too many times?

^^ is that a run on?

in my personal opinion, we should not have ANY history month... thats what history books are for. The fact that EVERY OTHER RACE gets freakin recognized IN AMERICA except WHITE PEOPLE.. urks me. But, with me saying that, that makes me a racist. Funny thing is, other races can sit here and bash on white people and we have to take it because if we retaliate then we are being racist. And some people may not agree with me but its true. Thats why there are no "dumb" black people in white humor.. thats why there ARE "dumb" white people in black humor... on television. The second a white person makes a racist joke, he gets called racist.. but NO other races can sit here and bash white people all they want!! Personally, I think america is just all backwards. Yes, okay, acknowledge black people for the slave times, but keep it in the history books. You don't ever hear about the hard times that white people went through... no. So, people in america are just all twisted!! GAH
