AGH! Navigation..HELP!, Buttons for navigation?..? Options

I'm afraid I am another stupid loser newbie who doesn't know what she is doing....so here's my question:

I'm making a layout and I have an area where I want to put navigation in. I tried doing the "Image Mapping" as it says in the Xanga Tutorial but instead of appearing outside the main blog area, it shows up as a box with a red X in it (image not working or whatnot..) - and then I tried doing the navigation at the end of the Xanga Tutorial, but that also came inside the blog area..!?! So how do I put in a navigation *above* everything? I'm confused and I feel stupid asking this- BUT I definitely followed the directions when making the skin...so....
