Yes, yes, I know the title doesn't fit the story much, but please bare with me =]
“Alayna! Wake up!” Mrs. Sutton shouted. “You have not paid attention to one word I’ve said, have you?” The class started giggling as Alayna turned bright red. “I’m sorry Mrs. Sutton. It... It won’t happen again.” Alayna stammered. “Now then Jeremy, read me the answer to number 7.” Mrs. Sutton continued as she taught her class. Alayna dozed off again, waiting for the bell to ring. She had been waiting for this day for weeks, and finally it came. Today was the day that Alayna would see her father, the father that had left her and her mother when Alayna was very young. She had always heard terrible things about him from her mother, but to Alayna, he seemed like the perfect person to have a good time with. “Riinngg.” The school bell rang, and Alayna darted out of the classroom, anxious to go home. She ran through the hallway rapidly, as some kids ran into her. “Watch it, big head.” They shouted. Alayna slowed down. “Big head?” She said to herself. “Do people really think I’m ugly? Nobody in Junior High gets made fun of.” Alayna started to feel a little self-conscious. She began running again, to the bus stop, dying to see her father. She waited patiently for the bus driver to drop her off. “And here we are, Alayna.” The bus driver, Earl, said with a jolly tone. “Thanks Earl!” She responded and got off the bus. Alayna ran through the front door and looked around eagerly, for her father. Her mother hesitantly walked in the living room. “Alayna, dear...” Her mother started. “You’re father, he… couldn’t make it. He had to go to another business trip.” Alayna was wretched. Not coming? How could he not come? “He sent you a package, though!” Her mother said, trying to cheer her up. She pointed to the table where the package was lying. Alayna took it and ran to her room. She jumped on her flower patterned bed and quickly opened the package. A card and a box fell out as Alayna threw the wrapping on the ground. She grabbed the card and opened it. “Alayna, my dearest daughter...” It read, “My deepest apologies for not being able to visit you. I was sent to India for a special job. I sent you a gift that I thought you would like. Please enjoy. Love, Dad.” Alayna grabbed the box and opened it. She peeked inside the box and found something that had a shiny bronze tint to it. “Great..” She thought “He sent me a box full of junk.” She took out what she thought was useless junk, but found that it was much more than that. It was what appeared to be a gene lamp. Alayna got excited about her gift. Noticing that there was sand on it, she grabbed a blanket and rubbed the sand off. On the spur of the moment, the room started spinning and filled with fog. Alayna saw a lustrous, blue light in front of her and all that appeared was a short, stumpy, transparent figure. “Oh my-” Alayna whispered. “Alayna,” The figure said. “You’ve rubbed my lamp in which I’ve been in for over 200 years. To repay you for your kind act, I will grant you 3 wishes.” Alayna knew exactly what she wanted. She wanted what most female teenagers wanted; Beauty, knowledge, and happiness. “Well. My first wish is that I want to be beautiful.” So the gene granted her wish and let her continue with her wishes. “My second wish is that I wish I was as smart as a straight A student.” Once again he granted her wish, and she continued. “Finally, I wish I had eternal happiness.” He granted her wish and she quickly shouted with joy. “Thank you!” She shouted. She grabbed a mirror and looked at her face. There had been no changes in her face! “I… I wished to be beautiful, yet I look the same!” She shouted. She pulled out her math homework, which she always struggled with, and tried to solve a problem. “I’m just dumb as I was before!” When she realized that none of her wishes came true, she started to yell. “Calm down.” Said the short, stumpy gene. “Beauty is what you wished for, yet you do not notice that you are already beautiful the way you are. You wished for knowledge, yet you do not realize that you do not try your hardest. Therefore, you can not be as smart as you possibly can. The last wish you made was for eternal happiness. You cannot be eternally happy by always looking on the downside of things.” If someone could criticize this, that would be great =] |
