ipod update/ extrenal power source issue Options

for the past few days, my itunes has been bugging me and sayng that I need. to download version 1.2 of ipod software, so I did, and it downloaded just fine and all, but after that it said I needed to plug it into an external power source. Now, there's a picture on my ipod of the USB power adaptor thing plugging into an outlet, and it won't go away no matter what I do. The obvious solution would be to plug it in, but my USB cord for some reason hasn't fit in it from the very beginning. My mom keeps saying she'll take me to the store to ask about it, but it's been nearly 2 months and she keeps putting it off. Now I can't do anything with it. Is there any way around this screen that I can use my ipod until I get the adaptor problem sorted out
