What to think, ... Options

So.. I asked this boy to the school dance after school yesterday and he said he doesn't know because he's not sure he'll be in town. I was planning to have a group of friends come over and I called him that night and asked if he wanted to go... conversation kind of went like this :

Me : Hey are you busy tonight?
Him : Nothing really.
Me : Well, I was wondering if you wanted to come over and hang out with everyone...
Him : What are we going to do?
Me : Movie
Him : I dunno I'll have to think about it
Me : okay, so have you thought about going with me to the dance
Him : Yeah I dont think I'm going to go, I dont like those sort of things, the only dance I'll probably go to is Prom.
Me : Oh okay then, so when will you know if you want to hang out.
Him : Hmm.. lemme think about it,*laughs* ... *pause* well I think I'm just going to stay home tonight because I'm pretty tired, thanks for inviting me though. Call me next weekend and I'm sure I can hang out then.
Me : .. next weekend is the dance *laughs*
Him : oh yeah! *laughs* well ...
Me : *laughs* well then I guess I'll talk to you later.. or.. tomorrow.. uhm.. whenever I see you?
Him : *laughs* okay, later
*hung up*

Do you think he's avoiding me? and... should i ditch the dance to hang out with him next weekend? advice on what to do?

I think he's *coughs* avoiding *coughs* you... I'm sry...But when guys are like this..they're not interested but they dont have the guts to tell you face to face...meh, they'll be other guys that wont be like this. Hmm...but there's always the other possibility...he being in shock that you asked him to this dance..and he's doesnt want to do anything wrong to turn you off...try giving him a little space...be more patient and see what happens...
