I'm in the situation right now. It pretty much sucks because he does anything for me. He's always around - it's annoying. I just feel like if I tell him, he'd go into one of his depressing moods and complain that no one wants to be with him. The worse thing is, I like his best friend. But, don't do anything. If he asks you out, then tell him gently. It will hurt him anyway but that's life, no?
