Navigation Help, Navigation Box Won't Show Up Options

I am currently coding my first Xanga skin, and I just have one problem. I am putting the navigation links in myself, but not with mapping. It's just links. I used a code for this from a tutorial, but when I added the code to the bottom of the rest of all my coding, it showed up in the blog and if I add it to the top, when you first load the page, you can see it for a second, but then it's like the image covers it up or something.
