during the revolutionary war, americans were labelled as terrorists under the British Terrorism Laws, which stated that any violent insubordination qualified as terrorism. I would argue that they were indeed terrorists of a sort, one example being the boston tea party. They are fighting for their freedom from an imperialistic overseas power and that is exactly what the terrorists of the middle east are doing, except with far less pleasant techniques.
