I wrote this for one of my English classes. It's far from what I usually write, but I felt like sharing it after I came across it in my folder.
--- The Comedy Show Clapping echoing throughout the room greeted me, as I stepped up onto stage. I wondered who came to see me, wondered if the ones who were now clapping would later on strike me down with complete utter silence. I sighed. "This is it..." I thought to myself. I had prepared for this day - rehearsal after rehearsal, endlessly polishing my jokes. They had become a part of me, and I had so much confidence in them as well. I didn't expect to do well at all with the comedy show project. Of course, when it had first been assigned, my mind was a blank slate. Me, funny? Couldn't imagine. What could I joke about? I panicked as days went by, and it took me quite a while to see the obvious. What did I have so much knowledge of and could derive humor from to thus allow me to make fun of? Something I constantly ridiculed - Ah, yes, my own culture. Rehearshals made me learn so much. Especially putting out my feelings on the line, as well as swallowing my pride and accepting critcism - Something that I sometimes have trouble dealing with. It helped me as an actor, but helped me develop more as a person. The jokes I managed to compile made me realize what some of my views were, and challenged the cleverness of a comedian in me. It was surprising to learn so much out of such a simple assignment...a simple performace. I squinted, now standing before a room packed with an audience ready to laugh at how sorry I was, or laugh at the hilarity of my jokes. I was blinded by the light set up for the stage, but that was the least of my worries. But how would I know the room would soon be bouncing off with laughter and appreciation for my humor? I took a deep breath, wiped the sweat off my palms onto my pants, took the mic, and began. --- BTW, that was my first stand up comedy act. I later went on to do three other performances, one of which was at The Laugh Factory. |
