I'm curious. What do "normal" people think of band geeks? What do you think we really do at band camp? Do you think it takes hard work to do what we do? Do you consider marching band a sport or an athletic?

QUOTE(Bubblegum @ Aug 22 2004, 6:03 AM) Well. Drum line really isn't thing like band, or in my band, for that matter. I wasn't going to comment, because I wanted to see all of your comments first, but I am going to bestow the ultimate band geek secret: what we really do at band camp...... *intense anime music begins* We don't play around. It isn't a sex education course. We work hard. Harder than most teenagers can claim they work. We stand all day long (the only breaks we get are meal breaks) in the hot sun, sweating like pigs. We start early in the morning and end late at night...why, at one camp, we got up at six a.m. and they dismissed us at midnight! Imagine one to two weeks of that. Well, what do we do that's so hard and takes up all that time?...*laughs* You don't want to know, really. Can you play an instrument? Really, you can? That's what i thought. You have to be pretty advanced on your instrument-- know how to play it, including fingerings or positions, embouchure, tuning, rhythms, dynamics, and way more. Got that? Now you must perfect the art of marching. That is not as easy as it sounds. After that, it gets worse! You memorize your music. And then you have to plot coordinates on the field (like a graph) by reading mini papers that have tiny, hardly legible letters. After that, you piece all the coordinates together nonstop (think of making an animation). You'll be making pictures on the field with these coordinates. You have to keep facing the sideline yet manage to look around and watch the others around you to make the perfect formations (harder than it sounds). And you do all that while playing the music you memorized correctly, playing your instrument correctly, marching correctly. Futhermore, being in band means discipline. You must always be early and prepared. Any little mistake almost always results in physical punishment. And it's worse. So, laugh. Next time you hear hear somebody quote, "This one time at band camp.." finish their quote off with a, "I stood in the hot sun all day, sweating like a pig and working my ass off, thank you." *intense anime music dies out* Wow.. Couldn't have said it any better my self.. Mind you I don't march because I am in the pit but it is still just as ahrd. I march our pregame and that kills me.. We had to be up by 6 a.m to walk to this place that was like 15 min away. You do get to have fun, like watch movies but sometimes you are too burnt out. They keep boys and girls seperate for almost all of the time, you can only meet friends of the opposite sex in the lounge or during dinner. I think I am normal just in marching band. There's nothing wrong with that. It's really hard trying to memorize and make sure you stop at the right and keeping a straight line.. YIKES! SO salute those in marching band |
