technically speaking it could work. you just adjust the width and height of the applet to the same size as your background. the problem i think is with the .class file. you need the applet's .class file and i think it has to be in stored the same directory as the html code. i'm not sure if you can remotely link it like you could with say a flash .swf file for instance, but i could be wrong. i think that will look cool if you can get it to work.
