technically speaking it could work. you just adjust the width and height of the applet to the same size as your background. the problem i think is with the .class file. you need the applet's .class file and i think it has to be in stored the same directory as the html code. i'm not sure if you can remotely link it like you could with say a flash .swf file for instance, but i could be wrong. i think that will look cool if you can get it to work.
 one other thing, if you can't download the applet from their site. try searching around for java applets similar to that one. there are a lot of sites where you can download free java applets. good luck!
