I found this comparison of the writings of George Orwell (1984) to Aldous Huxley (Brave New World) to be interesting:
![]() Are we on a path towards 1984 or Brave New World? |

1984 was one of the most badass books I've ever read. You obviously didn't get to the prison scene where the punishment for eating over one's portion of bread includes a bodybuilder security guard (specially employed for infractions like this) calmly walking up to the offender and punching him in the face. That's on top of the story villain lamenting the main protagonist for having too small biceps, the police arresting the characters for being too lovey-dovey, the subtle message of self-betterment as Winston goes from a sniveling emotional pussy to an upstanding member of the militaristic industrial complex... the list goes on. It's like someone saw a picture of gigantic testicles and told Orwell "Hey, make a society based on these."
Writer Czesław Miłosz actually handed out copies to the underground resistance in communist Poland and they couldn't believe Orwell was a Brit not born under fascism, so succinct and realistic was what the book described. |
