lawyer: was it your intention to get young black people to be violent to police? tupac: no lawyer: were you trying to provoke anyone to do anything particular? tupac: yes lawyer: tell us what tupac: think. do you believe music is responsible for young people's actions? not limited to rap, that's just my example. there's lots of music charged with making kids go nuts, metal, junk school shooting kids listen to, etc. whenever young people do something bad they always turn around and ask what music they were listening to. |

I think music has a tons of influence on people. Whether a person is good or not I don't think is influenced by music, but the way they behave I think is. For instance, you can have a good and a bad person, and that's who they are. Then branching off of that they might be mild mannered, aggressive, subversive, deceptive, etc. The same could be said for a good person. For instance, deceptive bad person might be sneaky with their crimes, a deceptive good person might try to help but can only do it by being sneaky about it.
Put music into the equation and I think it alters the current states of people. If you're a good person and you're listening to hard rock and stuff that sounds violent, I don't think that will turn a good person violent, but it might make them more aggressive in what they do. They might speed a bit more, might rush to get things done, but that doesn't make them bad. I listen to a lot of trancey stuff, and it tends to have a calming effect. Sometimes when I'm feeling 'manly' I'll listen to some harder stuff, some rock, some 'get you pumped up and punch babies' type of music. I think that's generally the influence music has on people. In some cases, I think music can change who a person is. There have been stories of "music saving my life." Well I don't think that's how it is in most cases, maybe just the extremities. I will use myself as an example for this, go me! Anyway, since I started listening to trancey stuff, it's had a calming effect on me. I've had a lot less stress lately because a lot of stuff I listen to, well it just relaxes me and makes me feel less worried about a lot of things. I manage to put things into perspective, figure out what I need to do, and get started. Anyway, it could be part of maturing, might not. I've met a lot of [now] close friends because of this music I started listening to. They've had a pretty decent influence on me too, and it's indirectly influenced by the music I chose to listen to. |
