I take a great interest in mental illnesses.
We're learning some about it in English and how most mental illness stories reflect how society is..etc. had some questions :) First, in todays world, do you have to be diagnosed with a mental illness to be hospitalized? or can you check yourself in? just coz? Second, do people still preform labotemies? (idk how to spell it). They used to do it a lot in the 1960s..and went in thru the eye sockets. If they still do it today, why? Third, do you feel like society today is "neglecting" mentally ill people? do you feel that this is why almost 1/3 or more of homeless people have a mental illness? Society has falsely promised help for these people, homes and hospitals are full and they have no where to go? Or is it just an excuse to be where they're at in life? Fourth, do you recommend any good books are movies about this stuff? i have read and watched Girl, Interrupted and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Fifth, do you feel that the routines some hospitals put on patients decrease their chances of being able to re-enter society? or do you feel that it helps them remain stable? ...err, i had more questions, but i have forgotten them. |

1st- I was not saying that being homeless causes a mental disability or illness. I'm saying that do you think, that for the people who have a mental disability or illness AND are homeless, do you THINK- that the reason they are HOMELESS is because of the neglect or "ignorance" of society? Its taken almost 40yrs for people/society to get to the point where they can admit they may be even depressed. Got the statistics from my teacher.
IN FACT, 4/5 of these questions were asked in class, which is why im asking them here. I'd like to hear more views/opinions and from more people. HENCE, why i am not reading up on these questions like someone suggested or asking a professional. These are opinions im looking for. Thanks for contributing. (not sarcastic) I have seen flowers for algernon and read it. Girl, Interrupted happens to be my favourite book and one of my favourite movies, thank you. But not because of the whole mental thing, it just asks some very good questions when it comes to life or process of thought. yes, it is self absorbed, but so am i~ A lot of what you've said makes it sound like im dumb about this- im not. its something i read up on often and talk to about with many people. Like i said, i take great interest in it. When it comes to the question can you check yourself in, i know you yourself can sign saying you are there to be there, YOU checked yourself in. What im asking is if you have to have someone sort of "recommend" you, before you can go in.. and you answered my question, thanks. *sighs* Superstitious- you completely misunderstood my fifth question, im too busy atm to bother explaining. here for OPINIONS OPINIONS OPINIONS. |

(not sarcastic) lol professionals give their opinions too and in my OPINION, if you read from a bunch, you can get a pretty good idea about different mental illnesses. |
