I take a great interest in mental illnesses.
We're learning some about it in English and how most mental illness stories reflect how society is..etc.

had some questions :)
First, in todays world, do you have to be diagnosed with a mental illness to be hospitalized? or can you check yourself in? just coz?

Second, do people still preform labotemies? (idk how to spell it). They used to do it a lot in the 1960s..and went in thru the eye sockets. If they still do it today, why?

Third, do you feel like society today is "neglecting" mentally ill people? do you feel that this is why almost 1/3 or more of homeless people have a mental illness? Society has falsely promised help for these people, homes and hospitals are full and they have no where to go? Or is it just an excuse to be where they're at in life?

Fourth, do you recommend any good books are movies about this stuff? i have read and watched Girl, Interrupted and One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.

Fifth, do you feel that the routines some hospitals put on patients decrease their chances of being able to re-enter society? or do you feel that it helps them remain stable?

...err, i had more questions, but i have forgotten them.

i'm not saying it's realistic. i'm saying it's f*cked up to blame a mentally ill person's living situation on them not "taking responsibility" for themselves.

most mental illnesses develop through time, could they have gotten help earlier? do they have friends? do they have family? also im blaming homeless person's mental illness on them for not "taking responsibility", not the other way around

i just disagree. i've been taking care of my brother all summer. he's schizophrenic and it didn't develop "through time" really. a year ago he was a normal carbon copy of myself basically and now he can't do anything at all. i would say he got help as soon as it was clear that something was wrong. that hasn't stopped him from being crazy as hell. getting help early might help but it doesn't stop it or make them normal again.

i can tell you that friends don't last that long when you're mentally ill, they just don't unless they are extraordinary friends.

as far as family not everyone is that lucky. it's unbelievably hard to take care of someone out of touch with reality. a lot of people just can't do it. it's a full time job and a lot of families can't afford/aren't able to dedicate 24 hours a day to it.

i don't understand where these people are supposed to go or what they are supposed to do when they can't help it

im sorry about your brother, schizophrenia is nothing to close to easy to treat let alone heal, but let me rephrase myself, i probably gave you the wrong impression

no matter what you do, people are gonna die, people are going to be ill, it sucks, i know, but only the selected advantage few are going to be the ones that get any kind of treatment at all, now instead of the whole pity route that i could've said, i went with the tough love approach, but my main fact remains, only those with the ability to get help fast or the active approach to mental illness are the ones who are ones that get treatment

yes i understand, the homeless and sick can't help it, but for every one you can treat, thats one less patient (sorry to say) like your brother that can't be treated

i agree those are the only ones who are going to get treatment.

i just think that it's unfair. i don't think it's these people's fault or that they don't deserve treatment just because their family sucked at getting them help right off the bat. i duno. i just don't think it has anything to do with their own responsibility i guess.

of course its unfair, and yeah its not their fault, but when you got all these odds against you, the only thing you can do is to try get help for yourself, but cmon, you know im a troll on this site
