Do you feel as though you have the right to judge those of the same race? A few friends and I had this discussion earlier after another guy who considers himself a "redneck" called someone else "white trash." Initially, it got a lot of laughs, but as the discussion rolled on, a friend of mine openly said that he wasn't eager to help Katrina victims when he lived in Mississippi. The remark got a lot of mixed responses. Soon after that, another guy made a comment about how he loathes the term "hispanic."

My grandfather was Spanish. We're talking from Spain Spanish. If you called him Mexican, he would kick the tar out of you, no joke.
Although, I really didn't and honestly, still don't consider him a racist for that. He never expressed any distaste for Mexicans, he just hated the assumption that some make in southern California that if you're Spanish, you're Mexican. |
