Do you feel as though you have the right to judge those of the same race? A few friends and I had this discussion earlier after another guy who considers himself a "redneck" called someone else "white trash." Initially, it got a lot of laughs, but as the discussion rolled on, a friend of mine openly said that he wasn't eager to help Katrina victims when he lived in Mississippi. The remark got a lot of mixed responses. Soon after that, another guy made a comment about how he loathes the term "hispanic."

Here's my dogmatic approach: racism shouldn't exist period. I don't care if you are the same race, quit playing mind to others and deal with your own existence.
Of course, we can't always help ourselves. I'm a California girl living in Tennessee. I'd love to think that I'm the type of person that wouldn't inch back from a pot bellied, toothless, sweaty guy in overalls wearing no shirt but I'm not. That terrifies the hell out of me. It angers me as well. I'm a white-looking girl living in the south. I hate the idea that someone would think of me as southern trash based on that information only and I blame people like that overall guy for the oft assumption that white people in the south are rednecks. |
